Men's Lacrosse Wraps Up Fall Practice With Scrimmages Against Penn and Stony Brook

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s lacrosse team will make its only appearance of the fall this weekend when it heads to Long Island for a pair of exhibitions. Syracuse will play Penn and Stony Brook in a three-way scrimmage hosted by the Seawolves beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The scrimmages mark the end of SU’s six-week “Fall Ball” season. After this weekend, the Orange will begin its off-season training program in preparation for the upcoming 2008 campaign.
It’s no surprise Syracuse is loaded once again, as the squad returns 84 percent of its scoring offense from a year ago, including its top five goal scorers. Leading the way is senior attackman Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) and junior attackman Dan Hardy (Tully, N.Y.) The duo tied for the team lead in 2007 with 22 goals each and both were selected as honorable mention All-Americans. Leveille was recently named a team captain for the second year in a row.
Hardy spent part of last season running in the midfield and has also seen action at that position this fall.
Junior Kenny Nims (Watertown, N.Y.) was the third piece of SU’s starting attack unit in 2007. He contributed 18 goals. Like Hardy, Nims has been splitting time this fall between attack and midfield.
The Orange received some good news in August when senior face-off specialist Danny Brennan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) was granted another year of eligibility by the NCAA. Brennan ranked in the top 10 nationally in face-off winning percentage in 2007 and his return cushions the loss of face-off ace Jon Jerome to graduation.
Syracuse also brings back two thirds of its starting close defense. Seniors Kyle Guadagnolo (Jordan, N.Y.) and Evan Brady (Ridgewood, N.J.) are back in the mix and both were elected team captains for this season. Guadagnolo has started every game the past two years and Brady started 12 games in 2007 after missing the season opener due to injury.
Starting goalie Peter Coluccini (South Salem, N.Y.) should be ready for start of the 2008 regular season. He has been limited this fall after having surgery on his foot during the summer. Sophomore Al Cavalieri (Lathrup Village, Mich.) and rookie John Galloway (Syracuse, N.Y.) have received most of the reps in the cage during fall practice.
Galloway was Inside Lacrosse’s second-ranked goalie coming out of high school and he leads an incoming freshmen class ranked No. 5 by the publication. SU’s crop of newcomers features five members of the magazine’s top 50 freshmen, including midfielder Joel White (Cortland, N.Y.), who will represent the United States at next year’s U-19 ILF World Championship.
Stony Brook finished last season with an 8-5 overall mark. The Seawolves return four players that tallied at least 20 points last year. Senior Bo Tripodi was the club’s top offensive threat. He finished 2007 with 28 points, including 21 goals. Classmates Owen Adams (21 points), Ryan Hughes (23 points) and Robert Trenkle (24 points) are also back in the mix.
One of the challenges for Coach Rick Sowell will be replacing Brendan Callahan, last year’s starting netminder. Callahan had 175 saves and a 9.82 goals-against average. The most likely candidates are sophomores Rob Camposa and Alex Kajencki. Camposa appeared in three games last season and Kajencki saw action in two contests.
Penn won its first three games last season, but lost seven of its last 10 to finish with a 6-7 overall record.
Junior attackman Craig Andrzejewski dominated the scoring column for the Quakers in 2007. He finished with 49 points (no other Penn player had more than 22), including 24 goals. Classmate Casey O’Rourke is the team’s second-leading returning scorer. He had 20 points last season.
Sophomore goalie Chris Casey got significant playing time his rookie year. He appeared in 11 of the team’s 13 games and finished with a 9.87 goals-against average. He made 94 saves and posted a 3-6 record.
