TAMPA, Fla. – Sophomore goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan’s eight saves, including six in the second half, was not enough as the women’s soccer team was defeated by South Florida Friday, 1-0. Bennett-Hattan’s six stops in the second stanza ties a season-high for saves in a half – she stopped six in the first half of SU’s 0-0 game at No. 8 Boston College on Sept. 16.
South Florida got on the board at 70:22 when senior Lindsay Bauer registered her team-leading third goal of the season. Junior Autumn Browning set up the goal.
Senior forward Lauren Jentzen reentered the game at 79:21 and provided a spark for the Orange. She produced two shots within the final six minutes. Her first try at 84:22 from close in was saved by sophomore Mallori Lofton and her next go came at 87:50, which was also saved.
Jentzen had a team-high three shots on goal. Her first try came only 7:56 into the match. The Orange registered six shots on goal during the game, including four in the first half. Freshman forward Megan Bellingham, freshman midfielder Dana Bergstrom and junior forward Amanda Arcuri were the other SU student-athletes with scoring chances.
Bennett-Hattan, who has a goals-against average of 1.23 and a save percentage of .818, has made eight or more saves in a game four times this season. Her counterpart, Lofton, denied six shots in the game.
Syracuse (5-6-3, 1-4-1 BE) took 10 shots and four corner kicks, while South Florida (3-5-2, 2-2-1 BE) had 18 shots and two corners.
