Syracuse Welcomes Notre Dame to Women’s Building on Sunday

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse volleyball team (12-9, 3-3) will look to extend its winning streak to three matches on Sunday when it hosts Notre Dame (7-9, 3-3) in a critical BIG EAST clash at 2:00 p.m. in the Women’s Building. The Orange is in the midst of a pivotal eight-match homestand and coming off consecutive three-game sweeps against Georgetown on October 7 and DePaul on October 12.
Orange Rewind
Senior Cheryl Cobbina paced the Orange offense with a team-high 13 kills and senior Joscie Kaup scooped a club-best 13 digs as Syracuse tallied a three-game sweep against DePaul on Friday in the Women’s Building. Kaup, who became the Orange’s all-time leader in career digs on September 1, collected the 2,000th dig of her three-plus years Syracuse tenure against the Blue Demons.
Redshirt-junior April Quigley guided the SU attack with a team-best 27 assists while sophomore Kacie MacTavish paired 11 kills with seven digs. Junior Brittany Kern and sophomore Sarah Morton posted an identical six kills and five total blocks apiece. Sophomore Samantha Ainsworth collected 10 assists.
Notre Dame (7-9, 3-3)
After voted to finish first in the BIG EAST preseason poll conducted by the conference’s head coaches, the Fighting Irish has struggled thus far in 2007. Notre Dame dropped to .500 in BIG EAST play following a 3-1 loss at Marquette on Friday. Adrianna Stasiuk led the Fighting Irish with 19 kills and 13 digs. Serinity Phillips collected 16 kills while Megan Fesl added 10. Head coach Debbie Brown utilized a two-headed setter attack as Ashley Tarutis posted a club-high 29 assists while Jamel Nicholas totaled 23.
All-time Against Notre Dame
In a series that dates back to 1981, Notre Dame holds a 14-1 all-time advantage, including 14 consecutive wins, against the Orange. Syracuse’s lone series win, a 3-1 decision, came in 1981. The Orange avenged a 15-11 loss in game one to defeat the Fighting Irish in four sets.
Last Time Against the Fighting Irish
Notre Dame ended Syracuse’s four-match win streak with a 3-0 win on October 8, 2006 in South Bend. Freshman Kacie MacTavish led the Orange with 13 kills while collected 12 digs. Joscie Kaup posted a team-high 20 digs and Sarah Morton totaled four solo blocks. Samantha Ainsworth guided the Orange attack with a team-leading 28 assists.
