Orange Continues Homestand, Welcomes Marquette

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse volleyball team (12-10, 3-4) continues its season-long eight-match homestand on Saturday, October 20 against BIG EAST foe Marquette at 2:00 p.m. in the Women’s Building. The Orange’s 3-4 mark in the BIG EAST is one game shy of the eighth and final playoff spot. The Golden Eagles arrive in Syracuse with an 8-9 overall mark and a 5-2 record in conference play, ranking third in the league standings.
Orange Rewind
After Syracuse’s 3-0 win against DePaul on Friday, October 12, Notre Dame rallied from one game down to defeat the Orange, 3-1, on Sunday, October 14. Senior Cheryl Cobbina earned BIG EAST Honor Roll distinction after collecting her ninth double-double of the season. Cobbina paired a team-best 17 kills with 11 digs. Redshirt-junior April Quigley, who led the Orange with a club-leading 54 assists, added 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish’s totaled a team-high 18 digs and posted 16 kills for her ninth double-double of the season.
Senior Joscie Kaup, who tallied the 2,000th dig of her Orange career against DePaul, recorded 17 digs. Sophomore Sarah Morton, who ranks second in the BIG EAST (conference matches only) with a .400 attack percentage, collected 15 kills.
Marquette (8-9, 5-2)
Marquette’s four-match win streak was snapped Thursday night following a 3-1 loss to cross-town rival Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Senior Kimberley Todd leads the Golden Eagles’ offense with a team-high 297 kills and a 4.79 kills per game average, ranking second in the BIG EAST (all matches). Redshirt-senior Katie Weidner has guided the Marquette attack with a team-high 718 assists and an 11.58 assists per game average. Defensively, junior Terri Angst has led the Golden Eagles’ back-line a team-high 266 digs.
In Marquette’s last win, a 3-1 triumph against DePaul, Todd powered the offensive attack with a team-high 15 kills while Weidner totaled 44 assists. The Golden Eagles evened its overall record at 8-8 after dropping four-matches under .500 two weeks prior.
All-time Against Marquette
In a series that dates back to 1994, Syracuse and Marquette have played to a 2-2 draw in four matches. After an 11-year hiatus, the series resumed in 2005 with the Golden Eagles’ inaugural BIG EAST season. The teams have split the last two meetings with SU victorious in 2005 (3-1) and Marquette capturing a win in 2006 (3-1).
Last Time Against the Golden Eagles
Kacie MacTavish paced the Orange with 17 kills and Cheryl Cobbina added 14, but Marquette posted a 3-1 win against Syracuse on October 14, 2006. Emily Kaier and Sarah Morton each tallied six kills. Joscie K aup paced the Orange defense with a team-high 17 digs while Morton collected four total blocks. April Quigley guided the SU offense with 47 assists. Syracuse responded to win its next three matches against Siena, West Virginia and Pittsburgh.
Next In Line
The Orange will continue its season-long eight-match homestand, but break from BIG EAST play when Long Island visits the Women’s Building on Sunday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. Syracuse meets the Blackbirds for just the second time in the program’s history.
