Orange Entertains Long Island in Non-Conference Tilt

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse volleyball team will look to capture its fourth victory in the last five outings on Sunday, October 21 in a non-conference tilt against Long Island at 3:00 p.m. in the Women’s Building. The Orange will look to build off the momentum gained from a critical 3-1 BIG EAST win against Marquette on Saturday, October 20.
Orange Rewind
Senior Cheryl Cobbina powered the Orange offense with a team-high 19 kills while sophomore Kacie MacTavish added 18 in Syracuse’s 3-1 win against Marquette on Saturday, October 20. Redshirt-junior April Quigley tallied a team-high 54 assists as the Orange evened its conference record at 4-4. Senior Joscie Kaup led the SU defense with a club-leading 15 digs. Sophomore Sarah Morton paced the Orange defense with a team-high five total blocks.
Long Island (12-10, 3-0)
The Blackbirds arrive in the SU Women’s Building following three consecutive three-game sweeps at the hands of Robert Morris, Rutgers and St. Francis (Pa.). Long Island has captured nine wins in its last 10 matches. Martina Wagner leads the LIU offensive attack with a club-best 348 kills while Lindsey Patty has added 551 assists. Defensively, Svetlana Simic paces the Blackbirds with 256 digs and Trevon Dyson has tallied 84 total blocks.
In the Blackbirds 3-0 triumph against St. Francis (Pa.), seven players collected at least two kills with Dyson leading the charge with nine. Dunja Milin guided the LIU attack with a squad-best 18 assists. Dyson and Shelby Heggie totaled three total blocks apiece.
All-Time Against Long Island
Today’s match marks just the second meeting all-time between the Orange and Blackbirds. Long Island holds a 1-0 all-time series advantage after a three-game sweep of Syracuse in 2006.
Last Time Against the Blackbirds
Annabelle Pellerin led the Orange offense with a team-high 15 kills in Long Island’s 3-0 win against Syracuse on November 11, 2006. Emily Kaier posted six kills as April Quigley served a team-leading 26 assists. Joscie Kaup stabilized the Syracuse back-line with a club-high 14 digs.
Next In Line
The Orange will continue a brief non-conference swing with a double-header on Tuesday, October 23 against Colgate (4:00 p.m.) and Cornell (7:00 p.m.) in the Women’s Building. Syracuse resumes BIG EAST action on Saturday, October 27 on the road against West Virginia at 2:00 p.m.
