SYRACUSE – The Syracuse field hockey team becomes the first Orange team for the 2007 fall season to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament following a 3-3 conference record in Syracuse head coach Ange Bradley’s first season. The SU soccer team posted a 0-1-1 record on the week following a 1-1 tie at Hartwick. The Syracuse swimming and diving teams captured 25 of 38 events with the men winning 10 and the women collecting 15 at the Orange Invitational. The Orange tennis team continued its 2007 fall season at the two-day Brown Invitational. Syracuse volleyball totaled a perfect 2-0 weekend and improved its record to 4-4 in the BIG EAST following a critical 3-1 win against Marquette. The SU women’s soccer team finished one up and one down on the weekend, including a 1-0 shutout win against Seton Hall.
The Orange men and women’s cross country teams enjoyed an off week in preparation of the 2007 BIG EAST Championship hosted by Louisville on Saturday, October 27. In last season’s final, the men harriers matched a program-best fifth-place finish while the women placed seventh.

Despite a 5-2 loss against #6 Connecticut on Sunday, the Orange field hockey team qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament, held at J.S. Coyne Stadium, due to holding a tie-breaker advantage against Villanova. Syracuse captures the tournament’s four-seed and will face either the Huskies or Louisville on November 3. Senior Gloria Nantulya and freshman Shelby Schraden tallied the Syracuse scores against Connecticut. Junior goalkeeper Heather Hess collected seven saves. The Orange returns to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season.

The SU men’s soccer team completed an unbeaten non-conference mark this season following a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Hartwick on Wednesday. Sophomore Hansen Woodruff collected his team-leading eighth goal of the year as the Orange finished with an 11-0-8 record against teams outside of the BIG EAST the last two seasons. Junior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia tallied two stops. Despite a late-game Syracuse offensive attack, Louisville posted a 1-0 shutout against the Orange on Sunday. SU registered five shots on goal while Cavicchia collected one save.

The Syracuse men and women’s swimming and diving teams captured 25 out of 38 event crowns, with the men winning 10 and the women collecting 15, at the two-day Orange Invitational. After four wins on Friday, the men tallied six triumphs on Saturday. Freshman Berk Kahraman, sophomore Baldizsar Kiss, junior Alex Taraskin and freshman Kuba Kotynia place first in the 200 medley. The women followed up a five-win day on Friday with a 10-win explosion on Saturday. Highlighting the women’s efforts was freshman Natalie Mazzetta’s first-place finish in the 400 IM, 500 free and 200 fly.

The Orange volleyball team evened its BIG EAST record at 4-4 following a critical 3-1 win against Marquette on Saturday. Senior Cheryl Cobbina led the Orange charge with a team-high 19 kills while redshirt-junior April Quigley collected a club-leading 54 assists. Senior Joscie Kaup and sophomore Sarah Morton paced the SU defense with 15 digs and five solo blocks, respectively. Syracuse captured its fourth win in the last five outings with a 3-1 non-conference triumph against Long Island on Sunday. Cobbina and sophomore Kacie MacTavish collected their 10th double-doubles of the season as the Orange improved its record to 5-0 against teams from the state of New York. Morton totaled a career-best seven solo blocks and moved into sole possession of second place on the Syracuse single-season solo blocks list with 54.

Freshman Dana Bergstrom’s first career goal with less than six minutes remaining proved to be the game-winner in Syracuse’s 1-0 shutout win against Seton Hall on Friday. The Pirates mustered just five shots but none on sophomore netminder Eliza Bennett-Hatten, who posted her sixth shutout of the season and the 12th of her Orange career. Sophomores Chelsea Berry and Sara Grimsgaard led the SU offense with two shots apiece. In Syracuse’s 2-0 loss at Rutgers on Sunday, the Orange fired nine shots led by freshman Megan Bellingham, Bergstrom and Berry’s team-high two. Bennett-Hatten stopped seven shots against the Scarlet Knights.
