SYRACUSE, NY – The Orange tennis team, under the direction of second-year SU head coach Luke Jensen, opens the 2007 fall schedule on Saturday, October 6 at the Billie Jean King Tournament in New York, N.Y.
“At this point in the year, everyone wants to play matches,” Jensen said. “Right now, our team has the itch to lay it all on the line. We’re really excited to see how this team reacts in pressure situations.”
Jensen and assistant coach Shelley George welcome back two letterwinners from the 2006-07 team that finished 11-9 overall, including nine wins in the last 12 matches. The Orange tallied a 4-3 BIG EAST record before finishing fifth in the conference tournament.
Junior Maria Vasilyeva returns to Syracuse after posting a 16-16 mark in singles action last season. Vasilyeva received BIG EAST All-Tournament distinction after collecting a 2-2 singles record. Sophomore Chelsea Jones returns after gaining significant experience in her rookie campaign with the Orange.
Sophomore Ashley Spicer joins the Syracuse squad after playing her freshman season at Washington State. Freshmen Katlyn Haycock, Simone Kalhorn, Emily Mauser, Christina Tan, Jacquelynn Tang and Ally Wickman complete the Orange roster.
Syracuse will join a field of 17 teams in New York, N.Y., as no team scores will be tallied at the Billie Jean King Tournament.
Following the Billie Jean King Tournament, the Orange returns to action Oct. 19 – 23 at the ITA Regional in Norfolk, Va.
