The game marks the first meeting between the two teams. Both the Huskies and the Orange enter the contest with records of 3-1 and they were each dealt their first losses of 2007-08 in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.
Syracuse led early in its semifinal match-up against Ohio State, but the Buckeyes drilled 9 of its 19 3-point attempts and pulled away in the second half after leading by eight at the break.
Washington hung tough with nationally-ranked Texas A&M before a dry shooting spell took the Huskies out of the game. A five-minute stretch in the second half without a field goal derailed their chances of reaching the title tilt.
The Orange got another solid performance from freshman phenom Donte’ Greene (Baltimore, Md.) in the semifinals. He had his second straight 20-point outing, tallying 21 against the Buckeyes, and he leads the club in scoring at 19.5 ppg. Greene has also been SU’s best 3-point threat, pacing the squad with 11 triples.
Junior guard Eric Devendorf (Bay City, Mich.) became the latest member of Syracuse’s 1,000-point club with 15 in the loss. Devendorf has 1,012 career points. He also contributed six rebounds, including a personal-high five offensive boards, against the Buckeyes.
Sophomore Paul Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) helped the Orange to a dominating 47-33 rebounding margin versus Ohio State. The forward grabbed 12 caroms to go with 10 points for his third double-double in four outings.
For Washington, forward Jon Brockman has been a force early this season. He is averaging a squad-best 22.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per outing through four games. He was the game-high scorer against the Aggies with 21 points. Brockman also paced all participants with 15 rebounds. He is shooting a blistering 52.1 percent from the field for the year.
The only other Washington player in averaging in double figures is guard Justin Dentmon (11.3 ppg).
Without a stable of dynamic scorers, defense has been a key to the Huskies’ early-season success. They have forced an average of 20.5 turnovers per game to take the some of the sting out of their opponents and create transition opportunities.
Following Friday’s game the Orange returns home for a pair of games. SU will host Massachusetts on Nov. 28 and entertain Tulane on Dec. 1.
