SYRACUSE - Syracuse completed its brief exhibition slate with a resounding 109-59 victory against cross-town foe Le Moyne in front of 9,040 fans in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday night. Freshman Donte' Greene (Baltimore, Md.) powered the Orange offense with a game-high 26 points on 10-for-15 shooting.
Rookie court general Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls, N.Y.)Â scored 15 points and totaled four steals while orchestrating a Syracuse offense that shot 59 percent from the field, including 41 percent from beyond the arc. Junior sharpshooter Eric Devendorf (Bay City, Mich.)Â collected 12 points and dished a team-high 10 helpers.
Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim, in his 32nd season at the helm of the Syracuse basketball program, received a spirited effort from freshman center Rick Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.). The Philadelphia native logged 21 minutes while posting a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 16 boards.
Sophomore workhorse Paul Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.)Â coupled eight points with nine rebounds. Junior center Arinze Onuaku (Lanham, Md.)Â totaled 11 points, on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting from the floor, and grabbed five caroms.
With the Orange holding a four-point lead, a stymie Syracuse inbounds defense forced the Dolphins into a 30- second timeout with seven and a half minutes remaining in the first half. The Orange emerged from the timeout, and led by Onuaku, responded with a 15-4 run that provided the hosts with a 45-31 advantage. Syracuse paced Le Moyne, 52-35, at the intermission.
The Orange opened the second half with an explosive 19-2 run that ballooned the host's advantage to 74-39. Greene spear-headed the Syracuse burst with 11 points, displaying an array of inside and outside scoring. The Orange's cushion would grow to as much as 91-52 with just under five and a half minutes remaining in the contest.
Junior college transfer Kristof Ongenaet (Ghent, Belgium)Â turned in his second straight solid performance in as many outings for the Orange. Ongenaet paired six points with six rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Freshman combo guard Scoop Jardine (Philadelphia, Pa.)Â totaled six points and four assists in 21 minutes of play off the bench.
Several Orange reserves arose from the sideline late in the second half with the game's outcome in the rear-view mirror. Sophomore post player Devin Brennan-McBride (London, Ontario)Â scored five points and senior Jake Presutti (Belmont, N.Y.)Â stroked a three-ball from the corner.
In the regular season's home-opener, the Orange welcomes Siena to the Carrier Dome on Monday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. as part of the Preseason NIT. Orange fans can catch the men's basketball team against the Saints on ESPNU.
