SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse (7-3) and Colgate (6-3) will square off for the 160th time when the Raiders visit the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, Dec. 18 for a 7 p.m. contest. The Central New York neighbors have met every year since 1993 and the series dates back to the 1901-02 campaign, SU’s second varsity season. The Orange holds a 114-45 lead in the series and has won every pairing since 1962.
Tickets may be purchased on-line (click here), over the phone (1-888-DOMETIX), or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office during normal business hours. Once again, fans will be able to receive their tickets immediately after their purchase, using the “Print At Home” delivery method. For additional information, fans can contact the Carrier Dome Box Office toll free (888-366-3849) or (315-443-2121).
Voice of the Orange Matt Park and former SU standout Gene Waldron will have the call on the Syracuse ISP Network’s flagship (TK-99.5 FM) with the pre-game show beginning an hour before tipoff. The radio network broadcast is available live on Orange All-Access. In addition, Tuesday’s game will be televised live in Syracuse and the surrounding area on Time Warner 26.
The Orange is coming off one of the most dominating offensive performances in school history. Syracuse routed East Tennessee State, 125-75, on Dec. 15. The scoring outburst matched the fifth-most points in school history and was its highest total since tallying 129 versus C.W. Post in 1989-90. The Orange tied the school record with 15 3-pointers and shot a blistering 75.8 percent from the floor (47-62) to establish a team record for single-game field goal percentage.
Six SU players scored in double figures, the second straight outing six performers tallied at least 10 points, and five players did not miss a shot. Center Arinze Onuaku (Lanham, Md.) was 9-for-9 against the Bucs and finished with 19 points. It was the second straight game in which he didn’t miss an attempt. Onuaku has made his last 15 shots from the field. Freshmen Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), Rick Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and walk-ons Justin Thomas (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Mike Williams (Buffalo, N.Y.) also did not miss versus East Tennessee State.
It should have been a banner night for the Orange, but the win was marred by a season-ending injury to starting guard Eric Devendorf (Bay City, Mich.). Devendorf tallied 19 points in the win, but tore his ACL early in the second half and did not return. His loss will mean increased roles for several players including Jackson, freshman Scoop Jardine (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior college transfer Kristof Ongenaet (Ghent, Belgium). All three saw plenty of action against the Buccaneers. Jackson scored 13 points for the second consecutive game and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds. Jardine notched a personal-high eight points and handed out a career-best six assists, while Ongenaet snared a career-high eight rebounds in 22 minutes.
The Raiders are in the midst of a six-game road trip. So far, Colgate is 2-1 in that stretch losing against Notre Dame (94-63) and defeating Cornell (76-73) and Binghamton (73-55). Following the Syracuse game, the Raiders, who are receiving votes in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll, will make stops at Penn State (Dec. 23) and New Hampshire (Dec. 30) before returning home on Jan. 2 against Maine.
Junior Kyle Roemer leads Colgate in scoring at 19.2 points per game. He has been the Raiders’ leading scorer in all nine games and ranks second in the Patriot League.
Senior guard Daniel Waddy is Colgate’s other double figure scorer averaging 10.0 points per game. Senior forward Kendall Chones is averaging 9.3 points per game and senior forward Tim Pounds is averaging 8.3 per contest. Junior Alex Woodhouse is the team’s leading rebounder with 5.1 per game, and ranks eighth in the Patriot League.
Colgate leads the Patriot League in field goal percentage (.476) and 3-point field goal percentage (.458). The Raiders are currently fourth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage.
