SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With more than 30,000 tickets already sold for Saturday’s game between Syracuse and Connecticut at the Carrier Dome, the arena has already clinched the largest on-campus crowd in college basketball this season. The Syracuse-Villanova clash on January 13 sold 26,874 tickets, the previous high for the 2006-07 campaign. Saturday's game will be televised live nationally on ABC. Live audio of the contest can be heard on SUathletics.com via Orange All Access and fans can also tune in to the Syracuse ISP Sports Network broadcast on WAQX (95.7 FM) and WNSS (1260 AM). Sirius Satellite Radio subscribers can hear the game on channel 152.
The contest is a rematch of the February 5 encounter in Storrs, Conn., that was won by the Huskies, 67-60. It’s a different story this time around for the Orange. Syracuse had lost three of its last four games heading into the Feb. 5 match at Gampel Pavilion. This time Jim Boeheim’s squad is riding a two-game winning streak heading into the game, including a road victory at USF on Feb. 14.
Against the Bulls, SU proved they are much more than the hot-shooting Demetris Nichols. USF held Nichols in check, one of the few teams this year to do, but the Orange found other way to get the ball in the basket. Senior center Darryl Watkins led the way with 18 points. He was 6-for-11 from the floor, with most of his shots coming within five feet of the basket. While Watkins was scoring inside, sophomore Andy Rautins was scoring outside. Rautins finished with 15 points, all on three’s. Sophomore Eric Devendorf also scored in double figures with 13 points.
Rautins has responded well as a reserve in the last four games, scoring in double figures in three of them, including a career-best 18 points against DePaul.
In the 12 days since their first meeting, Coach Jim Calhoun’s crew has lost at Georgia Tech (65-52) and defeated Seton Hall (67-55).
Coach Calhoun has the most youthful roster of his lengthy tenure at Connecticut. It’s made up of one senior, one junior, five sophomores and eight freshmen. The top 12 scorers are first or second-year players.
SU owns a 46-33 overall edge in the series with Connecticut, including a 22-12 mark in home encounters. The Huskies have won eight of the last 11 match-ups.
