Storrs, Conn. – Junior Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored three key goals to help lead the 11th-ranked Orange to victory against No. 20 Connecticut, 18-16, in overtime. Brady scored a goal late in regulation to send to the game into overtime and then added two goals during the first overtime session to help Syracuse to its third-consecutive victory and its second straight against a ranked opponent.
Storrs, Conn. – Junior Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored three key goals to help lead the 11th-ranked Orange to victory against No. 20 Connecticut, 18-16, in overtime. Brady scored a goal late in regulation to send to the game into overtime and then added two goals during the first overtime session to help Syracuse to its third-consecutive victory and its second straight against a ranked opponent.
Freshman Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) led the Orange with four goals. Brady, sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) and freshman Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) each tallied a hat trick and seniors Ashley Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) and Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) added two goals. Senior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) scored one goal and added two assists, while classmate Melissa Pearsall (Cortland, N.Y.) recorded one assist.
Syracuse (5-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) scored the first two goals of the game to grab the early advantage only to see the Huskies (5-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) use a 5-1 run to take a two-goal lead, 5-3. Rowan and DePetris both scored a goal to knot the game at five but Connecticut netted three goals in the final 1:23 of the first half to head into intermission with an 8-5 advantage.
Rowan and Quillinan scored the first two goals of the second half but the Huskies tallied the next three goals to take its largest lead of the afternoon, 11-7. Connecticut continued to lead throughout the second half and led by as many as three goals late in the game. The Huskies’ Laura Trzasko netted her first goal of the afternoon to give Connecticut a 15-12 advantage with 5:01 remaining in the game. Pike scored her second goal of the day with 4:34 left and Dove pulled the Orange within one with 2:32 remaining.
The Orange won the ensuing draw control and after Quillinan and Rowan recorded shots off target, Connecticut goalkeeper Jenna Moulton stopped Pike’s shot with one minute remaining. The Huskies attempted to clear the ball but Quillinan forced a turnover with 35 seconds remaining, leading to Brady’s first goal of the day with 27 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Brady gave the Orange its first advantage since 3-2 with her second goal of the day 1:18 into overtime. Dove and Brady each added one goal apiece in the next 37 seconds to give SU a three-goal lead at the overtime intermission. Connecticut pulled to within two, 18-16, and had a chance to pull closer but sophomore goalkeeper Amber Pardee-Hill (Lewiston, N.Y.) recorded a save on a free-position attempt to help seal the SU victory. Pardee-Hill made 10 saves on the afternoon.
Syracuse looks to continue its winning ways tomorrow, squaring off against Harvard at noon.
