
Orange Hosts N.Y. College Challenge Cup and SU Alumni Game This Weekend

2007 N.Y. College Challenge Cup Schedule and Format
The Syracuse women's soccer team will host the 2nd Annual Women's College Challenge Cup on Saturday, April 21. The event is the largest collegiate tournament in the Northeast and features Empire State squads Albany, Army, Colgate, Cornell, Rochester, Stony Brook, Syracuse and William Smith. Games will be held at Hookway from 10-4 on Saturday and the championship match will be at the SU Soccer Stadium at 4 p.m.
Syracuse, Albany, Army, and Rochester are in the Empire Group, while Colgate, Cornell, Stony Brook and William Smith comprise the Liberty Group. Each team plays every other team in its group and the winers of both groups meet in the championship match. A team is awarded three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Each match consists of a 22 minute first half, one minute change of ends, and a 23 minute second half. Group play has no overtime. The final match is Golden Goal format with one player taken off every two minutes until seven are remaining on each side.
The Orange won the first ever tournament last season. Syracuse takes on Albany at 10 a.m., Rochester at 11 a.m., and Army at 2 p.m. Also included in the weekend festivitiesis the 3rd Annual SU Alumni Game on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. The current Syracuse varsity team will take on alums representing every year of the SU soccer program.
Last weekend, the Orange took part in the Kicks Against Breast Cancer College Tournament at the SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. The tournament was held for George Mason, Loyola, Maryland, Navy, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Syracuse, Virginia, and William & Mary-all of whom rasied money for the Claudia Mayer Imaging and Resource Center. Syracuse held a mother-daughter clinic in the Carrier Dome in March. Syracuse played to a scoreless draw against Gerge Mason and lost to Maryland, 1-0.
Kicking off this weekend's play is a game between Syracuse and Binghamton on Friday, April 20, at 8 p.m. in the SU Soccer Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, April 15, but was postponed due to weather.o
