Syracuse head women’s basketball coach Quentin Hillsman announced today the addition of Rick Moody to the Orange program as an assistant. Hillsman was an assistant on Moody’s final Alabama staff in 2004-2005. Moody will be involved with player development, game plans and practice planning.
"Rick led the University of Alabama to some of its greatest accomplishments including the school’s only Final Four appearance. He truly helped bring national attention to the Alabama women’s basketball program having led the team to 11 postseason appearances including eight NCAA Tournaments,” Hillsman said. “He is also responsible for more than 300 victories in his career, the only Alabama basketball coach to attain that level of success.”
The winningest coach in University of Alabama basketball history, Moody retired from coaching at the end of the 2004-05 season. Moody, in 16 seasons at the helm of the Crimson Tide program, amassed 311 career victories. He is the only Alabama basketball coach, men’s or women’s, to reach 300 wins at the Capstone.
His tenure at Alabama was highlighted by consistent trips to the NCAA Tournament. Under his guidance, the Tide made eight consecutive trips to the "Big Dance" from 1992-99. In addition, he also led Alabama to five consecutive "Sweet 16" appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1994. The Crimson Tide also posted eight 20-win seasons under Moody.
Along with team success, Moody demonstrated the ability for developing top quality student-athletes on and off the court. His players earned numerous awards including two Kodak All-Americans, 22 All-SEC selections, two freshman All-Americans and 45 Academic All-SEC selections.
"Rick has spent many years establishing himself as a highly-regarded recruiter and player developer, building his programs so that they can compete for national championships,” Hillsman said. “I am so happy to bring someone with Rick’s experience into our program and into our community. He maintains the highest level of excellence on and off the hardwood and he will be a great representative of this program and university. We are so fortunate to have him join our Orange family."
Moody, who graduated from Troy University in 1976, started coaching at a junior high in Florida. After a couple of stints at the high school level, he joined Ken Weeks’ Alabama staff in 1982. The Crimson Tide made its first NCAA appearance in 1984.
Moody was the head coach for the Guntersville High School boys team for five seasons. He compiled a 91-48 record, and his teams made two appearances in the AHSAA tournament. He was named Alabama’s sixth head coach on March 20, 1989.
