The Syracuse softball team took some time out of its practice schedule to spend a day reading to Syracuse children. The Orange participated in the Week of the Young Child Reading event at the St. Vincent DePaul Day Care Center in Syracuse on Monday, April 23. Members of the team and the coaching staff read to children at the cay care center and had lunch with them as part of the ‘Cuse Cares Community Outreach program.
“We were able to take a day when we didn’t have practice and read to the three and five year olds at the day care center as a part of our community service,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “I think that the community needs to see that we care and are part of the community. It helps our team to see that there is real world around them. The student-athletes really love to do that and it’s nice for them to have these opportunities.”
The numbers of children and players worked out so that every child had a member of the team who read to them. Freshman outfielder Ev Anderson even sang a book to a group of children. After they all read, the players were invited for lunch and given a special cookie that the children made.
“Events like these show that we are not just here for the school, but that we also care about the community,” sophomore shortstop Nicole Miller said. “We aren’t just here for sports, we care about what’s going on around us.”
“We get so much from the community as fans that it’s important to give back and create a correlation between us,” second baseman Lindsay Wasek said.
