Softball Carries Three-Game Streak into Weekend

The Syracuse University softball team (19-28, 7-9 BIG EAST) hosts BIG EAST foe Rutgers (19-27, 6-8 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 28 at Skytop Stadium. SU swept the Niagara Purple Eagles, 6-4 and 8-7, its last time out. The Orange crushed six home runs in the two games to improve to 19-28. Junior Rachel Tilford hammered two in game two, and senior Erin Gray, junior Chanel Roehner and sophomores Lindsay Wasek and Heather Kim all blasted one apiece.
Syracuse is hitting .283 as a team and is led offensively by Roehner who is hitting .341 with 46 hits, 26 RBI, 25 runs, 11 doubles and five home runs. Kim is batting .336 with 46 hits, 26 RBI, 24 runs, seven doubles and five home runs. Freshman Ev Anderson is hitting .321 with 42 hits, 29 runs and eight stolen bases.

Rutgers is hitting .287 as a team and is led offensively by Sarah Kalka who is hitting .373 with 50 hits, 30 RBI, 29 runs, nine doubles, six home runs, and two triples. Mallory Miller is batting .338 with 47 hits, 33 runs, 31 RBI, 12 doubles, seven home runs and one triple. Kristen Madock is hitting .304 with 35 hits, 36 runs, 15 RBI, eight doubles and three home runs. The Scarlet Knights look to Chrissy Yard (9-9, 4.23 ERA/107.2 IP) and Nicole Lindley (6-6, 3.71 ERA/73.2 IP) in the circle. RU lost a 6-4 match-up with Monmouth University in its last outing on Wednesday. The Hawks scored four runs in their final at-bat to overcome a two-run deficit heading into the final frame.
The Orange currently sits seventh in the BIG EAST Conference. The top eight teams in the league will participate in the three-day, single-elimination event which will begin May 10. Rutgers is currently holding onto the eighth and final spot. The Belleville Softball Complex in South Bend, Ind., will host the 2007 BIG EAST Softball Championship. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
