SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange (21-30, 9-11) split its doubleheader against Villanova (24-26-1, 5-13) on Sunday, April 29 at Skytop Stadium. The Orange won in the bottom of the tenth in the first game on a two RBI single by sophomore CF Tonye McCorkle, ending the game with a final score of 10-9. Freshman RHP Brittany Gardner (12-21) got the start on the mound for both games of the doubleheader. She pitched 5.1 innings in the first game, but it was junior RHP Chanel Roehner (8-9) who was the pitcher of record for the first game, taking the win after pitching 2.2 innings of relief. A rough sixth inning for the Orange, gave the second game away to Wildcats, crediting Gardner with the loss in the second game.
Senior C Cassie Koenig hit a two-out home run in the top of the first, to give the Wildcats the early 1-0 lead in the first.
Roehner, who started the game in left field, hit a single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth to put the Orange on the board. Senior 3B Erin Gray, hit a two RBI triple to left field, but was thrown out at home plate when she tried to make it an inside-the-park home run. The Orange had the lead at the end of the fourth, 3-1.
The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the fifth as senior SS Sheri Donley singled to right field that scored RF Maggie Seidel. Senior C Cassie Koenig also had an RBI single in the inning, scoring junior OF Kayla Felty, who was pinch running for junior LF Greta Holmgren, from third. The score was 3-3 going into the bottom of the fifth.
The Orange took the lead again in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore C Amy Kelley started the inning with a walk, before sophomore 2B Lindsay Wasek got a double, putting runners on second and third. Sophomore SS Nicole Miller walked, which loaded the bases for the Orange. Freshman DP Ev Anderson hit a RBI fielder’s choice, that retired Miller at second, but not before sophomore Jorden Rosen, pinch running for Kelley, had scored. McCorkle followed by getting a RBI fielder’s choice, which scored Wasek. At the end of the fifth, the Orange led, 5-3.
The Wildcats answered back in the top of the sixth with five runs. Freshman 2B Jess O’Boyle singled to start off the inning before sophomore 3B Meghan Morese doubled to right center. Freshman 1B Eryn Teague walked to load up the bases. Seidel reached on a fielder’s choice, which eliminated O’Boyle at the plate. Curran, who pinch hit for Felty, hit a two RBI single to left field. Sophomore LHP Keri Casas came in for a relief appearance. Unfortunately, Casas could not get the job done, as junior CF Carolyn Brown singled to center field, and advanced to second as McCorkle misplayed the ball in center. Seidel scored on the play. Donley then hit an RBI single that scored junior Lisa Curran. Koenig then singled up the middle and Brown scored. The score was 8-5 Wildcats going into the bottom of the sixth.
With two outs, McCorkle hit a single back to the mound, where junior RHP Kat Walsh bobbled the ball, and McCorkle safely reached first on the error. Kim then walked to have runners at second and first, for Tilford who blasted a two-out, three run home run in the bottom of the seventh, to tie the game at 8, taking the game into extra innings.
With one out and a runner on third, Roehner relieved Casas on the mound, in the top of the eighth. Roehner got out of the inning without giving up a run and leaving the score tied for the Orange to come to bat in the bottom of the eighth.
Donley had a RBI double to center field, with two outs in the top of the tenth inning, giving Wildcats the lead 9-8.
The Orange responded for an exciting finish to end the first game of the doubleheader, as McCorkle’s two RBI single, scored Kelley and Wasek, who got on base with a walk and single respectively.
Morese hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning for the Wildcats in the second game of the doubleheader. Teague and Seidel both singled, before an error by Anderson in left field. Another error in the inning, the second one by Wasek, allowed Seidel to score and credit Donley with an RBI. Going into the bottom of the second, the Wildcats were up 4-0.
Wasek hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, scoring Tilford and Gray. Tilford had reached first on an error by the third baseman while Gray had hit a single up the middle, before Wasek blasted them home, which left the score at 4-3 at the end of the second.
The Wildcats tacked on one more run in the top of the third when Curran got a singe RBI as Teague scored from second. The Wildcats led it 5-3 at the end of the third.
Sloppy defensive play by the Orange led the Wildcats to place six runs on the board, pushing the lead to 11-3 after the top of the fourth. Gardner lasted 3.2 innings, before Casas came in to make the final out of the inning. Only three of the 11 runs were earned for Gardner; however, Gardner was the pitcher of record for the second game taking the loss. Junior RHP Nicci Ward (4-7) earned the win for the Wildcats.
Before the game began, Syracuse honored the lone senior on the team, Gray, for her contributions to the team throughout the past four years.
Syracuse has a week off for finals before traveling to South Bend, Ind. for the BIG EAST Championship on May 10.
