Syracuse University’s student-athletes, including 282 who earned distinction on the Fall 2006 Athletic Directors Honor Roll and all of those who have participated in community activities during the past year, are part of a national celebration. National STUDENT-Athlete Day, celebrated annually on April 6 since 1987, recognizes outstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to the community. It also recognizes those parents, teachers, coaches and school systems which make it possible for young people to find the balance between academics and athletics.
In March, the ‘Cuse Cares Community Outreach program earned the Syracuse University Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement and Scholarship. Orange student-athletes have participated in more than 1,200 hours of community activity since the beginning of the 2006-07 academic year.
National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994.
