SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University sophomore first baseman Heather Kim was named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine/CoSida Academic All-District First Team softball squad. Kim is now eligible for Academic All-American Honors. She is the 11th Orange player to earn academic all-district honors in the last six seasons. Kim is also SU’s fifth first-team pick in that span.
Kim compiled a .329 batting average (19-58) with 13 runs, 11 RBI, three doubles and two home runs during BIG EAST play this season. Overall, Kim is first on the team with a .436 on-base percentage, 50 hits and 26 walks. Her .333 batting average and six home runs rank second and her 28 runs, 28 RBI and five stolen bases are third on the team.
She currently has a 3.96 grade-point-average in psychology and political science.
Syracuse has had at least one player earn CoSIDA Academic All-District I honors in five of the last six seasons. The Orange boasts two Academic All-Americans in the program’s eight-year history.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
The Orange scored only one run and left ten runners on base and Louisville scored three unearned runs as the Cardinals defeated the Orange, 5-1, in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship. The loss ends SU season with a 21-31 overall record.
