SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse lacrosse players Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.), along with swimmer Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) were selected as ESPN The Magazine Men’s Academic All-District I honorees on Thursday, May 24. Rommel was named to the first team for the third time, and Leveille and Boral were each named to the second team. It is Leveille’s second straight second-team nod and also the second consecutive year Boral has been recognized.
Rommel, pursuing a master’s degree in bio-engineering, started all 13 games in the midfield for the Orange. He tallied 15 goals and six assists for 21 points in 2007, and paced SU with four man-up goals. Off the field, he is one of 10 finalists for the first Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for lacrosse and was a Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup honorable mention honoree. In addition, he participated in a variety of community service events, including an appearance at Morgan Road Elementary School to help students string lacrosse sticks and SU’s equipment and canned food drive, which benefited the Syracuse Boys and Girls Club and the Food Bank of Central New York.
By virtue of his placement on the district’s first team, Rommel’s name will be forwarded to the national Academic All-America ballot for voting by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Rommel was a first-team all-district choice in 2004 and 2005 as well.
Leveille started all 13 games on attack and led Syracuse in scoring (39 points) and assists (17). He also tied for the team lead with 22 goals. In the Orange’s upset of No. 2 Albany, Leveille registered a career-best seven points (5g, 2a) to help hand the Great Danes their first loss of the year.
An accounting major, Leveille accompanied Rommel to Morgan Road Elementary School and also participated in the equipment and canned food drive.
Boral capped his final season in the water with eight first-place finishes and competed in the 2007 BIG EAST Championship in five events. A graduate student in the information management program, Boral was presented with the 2007 Soladay Award at the inaugural ‘Cuse Awards earlier this month. The Soladay Award is the most prestigious honor bestowed upon an SU student-athlete for athletic and academic achievement.
To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must achieve sophomore standing at their current school and possess a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2. Participants in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling are eligible for the men’s at-large program.
