SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) of the Syracuse women’s lacrosse team added ESPN The Magazine Academic-All District accolades to her growing list of honors. A first-team regional All-American and All-BIG EAST honoree, Rowan is now eligible for Academic All-America recognition.
Rowan led the Syracuse offense in 2007 and set school records with 86 points and 59 goals during her sophomore season. A unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, Rowan joined Leigh-Ann Zimmer (2002 and 2004) and Gaddy Fortune (2006) as the only SU players to score at least one goal in each game in a single-season.
In just her second season, Rowan is putting her mark on the SU record books. She already ranks fifth in career points (142), fifth in career goals (105) and sixth in career assists (39). Rowan became the quickest player in school history to score 100 career points and goals, reaching the plateaus in just 28 and 34 games, respectively. She also matched single-game school records with 10 points and seven goals against Rutgers earlier this season.
In addition to her school records in points and goals, Rowan also recorded the third-most assists in a single season with 27. She not only ranks among the best at Syracuse, but also ranks highly in the nation. Rowan currently stands ninth in the NCAA with 4.53 points per game, 12th with 3.11 goals per game and 30th with 1.42 assists per game.
Rowan led the Orange to one of its most successful seasons in 2007. Syracuse won a school-record 13 games and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in school history. The Orange also won its first BIG EAST regular-season championship, won the inaugural BIG EAST Championship Tournament with its first-ever victory against perennial-power Georgetown and won its first-ever NCAA Tournament game. In addition, Rowan led the SU offense to a school-record 288 goals in 2007, crushing the previous standard of 205 goals.
Rowan, who is dual majoring in inclusive education and sociology, is the only sophomore listed on the District 1 First Team. The other nine members named to the at-large District 1 First Team are all seniors. Rowan, who spends her time away from the lacrosse field volunteering with people with special needs, is the third women’s lacrosse student-athlete to earn academic all-district accolades. Carrie Soults was named to the second team in 2001 and the first team in 2002, while Monica Joines garnered second-team honors in 2005.
