SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After helping lead the Orange to its most successful season in school history, three Syracuse student-athletes earned All-America recognition by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and US Lacrosse. Sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y) became the third player in school history to collect first-team honors, while senior Ashley Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) and freshman Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) picked up third-team honors.
“We’re pleased,” said head coach Lisa Miller. “We had a good year on attack and it was very balanced. The seven-person unit did a great job of putting three players in position to receive individual accolades.”
The trio is the 10th, 11th and 12th Syracuse players to earn All-America accolades in the last nine seasons. Syracuse’s three selections to the teams tie the school record. Katrina Hable was named to the second team in 2000, while Lauren Brady and Carrie Soults each earned third-team accolades. Only three schools (Northwestern, Duke and Maryland) had more All-America selections than Syracuse’s three.
A first-team regional All-American and a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, Rowan led the high-powered Syracuse offense and set school records with 86 points and 59 goals during her sophomore season. Rowan tallied at least a hat trick in 14 games and joined Leigh-Ann Zimmer (2002 and 2004) and Gaddy Fortune (2006) as the only SU players to score at least one goal in each game in a single-season. Rowan joined Zimmer and defender Stacey Brown as Syracuse first-team All-Americans.
“Katie Rowan is a great player,” Miller said. “She makes everybody on the team a better player.”
In just her second season, Rowan has already made a mark on the SU record books. She ranks fifth in career points (142), fifth in career goals (105) and sixth in career assists (39). Rowan became the quickest player in school history to score 100 career points and goals, reaching the plateaus in just 28 and 34 games, respectively. She also matched single-game school records with 10 points and seven goals against Rutgers earlier this season.
In addition to her school records in points and goals, Rowan also recorded the third-most assists in a single season with 27. She not only ranks among the best at Syracuse, but also ranks highly in the nation. Rowan, who also earned ESPN The Magazine District 1 First Team accolades, currently stands ninth in the NCAA with 4.53 points per game, 12th with 3.11 goals per game and 30th with 1.42 assists per game.
An All-Northeast Region First Team and All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, Pike was an offensive force during her senior season. Mainly a defensive midfielder and goalkeeper her first three seasons with the Orange, Pike recorded 52 points on 44 goals and eight assists after totaling only eight points and four goals her first three years at Syracuse. Her 44 goals in 2007 are tied for the seventh-highest total in school history.
Quillinan is the first SU freshman to be named an All-American and was the only freshman in the country listed on one of the three teams. She recorded 57 points on 50 goals and seven assists during her rookie season. A first-team regional All-American and All-BIG EAST selection, Quillinan established a new freshman standard at Syracuse with her 50 goals, eclipsing the mark that Rowan set in 2006 of 46 scores. Quillinan’s 50 goals rank third in school history and her 57 points are tied for the fourth-highest total in the program’s history.
Rowan, Pike and Quillinan led the Orange to one of its most successful seasons in 2007. Syracuse won a school-record 13 games and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in school history. The Orange also won its first BIG EAST regular-season championship, won the inaugural BIG EAST Championship Tournament with its first-ever victory against perennial-power Georgetown and won its first-ever NCAA Tournament game. In addition, the trio led the SU offense to a school-record 288 goals in 2007, crushing the previous standard of 205 goals.
