The Syracuse lacrosse coaching staff is in the midst of very busy summer. The coaches are conducting various camps in the coming weeks, and earlier this month spent time in Marietta, Ga. where they established a camp with former SU wide receiver and lacrosse player Mike Siano.
The Syracuse Championship Lacrosse Camp was held at Walton High School in Georgia from June 7-9. Approximately 80 campers received individual position and team instruction from Orange head coach John Desko and his staff. The players also participated in morning scrimmages, afternoon film sessions, and nightly shootouts. In addition, Desko conducted a coaching clinic for area lacrosse coaches. The clinic featured methods for teaching the fundamentals of the game and practical instruction on the field.
Back in Syracuse, the coaches are currently putting on the Future Orange Day Camp, run by SU assistant Kevin Donahue. The camp goes from June 25-29 and is for boys ages 8-15. The campers work on fundamentals, including proper groundball technique, shooting, and dodging. There are also one-hour scrimmage sessions each day.
The Future Orange Day Camp is the precursor for the Syracuse Championship Camp, an overnight camp for boys ages 11-17. The overnight camp is the showpiece of all the Orange lacrosse camps and runs from June 30-July 3. The event takes advantage of several campus athletic facilities and will feature a special appearance by Orange legends Casey, Ryan, and Mike Powell.
The Orange coaches will also host a pair of summer shootouts, one for elite/travel teams (July 6-7) and another for high school teams (July 8).
