
SU Graduate Competes at USATF Championships

Former Syracuse University triple jumper Samuel Okantey recently competed this past weekend in the USATF National Club Track and Field Championships in New York City. He finished fourth out of 13 in the men’s triple jump competition with a distance of 16.04 meters.
Okantey was a NCAA All-American at SU in the indoor and outdoor triple jump in 1999, setting school records that still stand in both events. He jumped 54-1 indoors and 54-11 outdoors to set the records. He was also the BIG EAST indoor triple jump champion and outdoor triple and long jump champion in the ’99 season. Okantey also holds the 60 meter dash record at Syracuse with a time of 6.69 seconds.
Since graduating from Syracuse, Okantey’s international career highlights include top finishes throughout meets in Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain. Okantey was second at the African Championships in 2000 and qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games, competing for Ghana, where he is a citizen.
