Former Orange Continue to Impress in Summer Leagues

Former Syracuse basketball players Demitris Nichols ’07 (New York Knicks), Darryl Watkins ’07 (Sacramento Kings) and Gerry McNamara ’06 (Philadelphia 76ers) continued to improve their play in NBA summer-leagues over the weekend. Nichols and Watkins played twice as the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nev. came to an end. McNamara and the 76ers opened up play in the 2007 Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City, Utah.
On Saturday, July 14, Nichols scored 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting in the Knicks 91-87 win against the Golden State Warriors. A day later, in the Knicks final game of the NBA Summer League, Nichols scored 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting and tallied four rebounds along with three assists in 22 minutes. Nichols also shot 2-of-5 in the Knicks 116-108 victory versus the Denver Nuggets. The former Syracuse forward averaged 15.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game as he assisted the Knicks in going 5-0 and tying for the NBA Summer League’s best record with the Dallas Mavericks.
Watkins accumulated nine points on 4-of-4 shooting to go with three rebounds in 15 minutes in the Kings 90-72 loss to the Houston Rockets on Saturday. The 6-foot-11-inch center tallied two points and one rebound the next day, as the Kings finished the summer-league with a 82-60 victory versus the Los Angeles Clippers and a 3-2 record. Over 5 games, Watkins averaged 3.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
McNamara made all six of his free throws for six points in the 76ers 91-75 victory against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, July 13. The 76ers improved their record to 2-0 on Saturday with a 100-85 win versus the Utah Jazz. However, McNamara did not play. The 76ers continue play today in the 2007 Rocky Mountain Revue in a meeting today, July 16 with the Chicago Bulls at 2:15 p.m.
Damone Brown ’01 and the Orlando Magic wrapped up their participation in the 2007 Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando, Fla. on Friday with a 63-57 loss to the Miami Heat. Brown did not play in the game as the Magic finished with a record of 3-2. The former Orange forward started every other game for the Magic and averaged 9.8 points per game.
