The Syracuse women’s lacrosse team, ranked No. 4 in Inside Lacrosse's preseason poll, held its first fall practice Wednesday, Sept. 12. The field of familiar faces was dotted with new additions to the team, including new head coach Gary Gait.
Gait was excited to take the helm of the women’s lacrosse program and holds high expectations for the 2008 season.
"My expectations are usually the same no matter what I’m doing," Gait said. “No matter where I’m coaching, or playing, the expectation is to walk away at the end of the season as the champions."Seniors Kristen Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.), Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.), Shannon Brushe (Catonsville, Md.), Christina Gibson (Jarrettsville, Md.), and Stephanie Bissett (Woodstock, Md.) will lead a veteran SU squad in 2008. Syracuse also returns eight starters from the 2007 season, including All-Americans Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.), Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.).
"I’m excited to be back,” Brady said “We all are, its been a long four months so we’re just happy to get back on the field."
The team echoed Gait’s expectations for the upcoming season.
"We’re just going to work really hard, get ready for the spring season and hopefully go for the national championship," Rowan said.
Syracuse finished the 2007 season after winning the inaugural BIG EAST Championship with a 13-6 record overall. The Orange defeated No. 10 Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA tournament and concluded its season with a loss to No. 1 Northwestern in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
