Orange Rewind: Syracuse extended its season-high win streak to five matches following a three-game sweep at Binghamton on Tuesday, September 11. The Orange improved its record to 4-0 against teams from the state of New York and ended the Bearcats’ 14-match home win streak dating back to the 2005 season. Senior Cheryl Cobbina powered the SU offense with a team-best 18 kills.
The Orange finished the week with a 1-2 record at the University of New Hampshire Tournament following two narrow five-game losses against SMU and New Hampshire, and a three-game sweep of Holy Cross. Freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis earned all-tournament team honors after posting 29 kills in three matches. Redshirt-junior April Quigley tallied her second and third double-doubles of the season against SMU and New Hampshire.
Scouting the Scarlet Knights (2-7)
Syracuse vs. Rutgers (9/21, 7:00 p.m.)
The Rutgers volleyball team has opened the season with two wins in its first nine outings. The Scarlet Knights ended a five-match skid with a three-game sweep against Norfolk State in their last contest.
Against the Spartans, sophomore Kyra Thompson collected a double-double after pairing 11 kills with 10 digs to power the Rutgers offense. Senior Amanda Meyer paced the Scarlet Knights’ attack with a team-leading 12 kills.
The Scarlet Knights received a two-fold threat from both junior Roxy Calder and freshman Emma Chrystal. Calder tallied a team-high 19 assists as Chrystal added 13. Defensively, sophomore Jamie Godfrey tallied nine digs as sophomore Sophie Cook collected four total blocks.
Thus far in 2007, freshman Katie Groff leads all Scarlet Knights with 52 kills. Calder has paced the RU offense with a club-leading 108 assists. Defensively, Godfrey has collected a team-high 72 digs and Cook leads all Rutgers players with 20 total blocks.
All-time, Syracuse holds an 11-7 series advantage and three-match win streak against Rutgers. The Orange’s last win, a three-game sweep, came in 2006. The Scarlet Knights last defeated SU in 2003, 3-2.
What’s Ahead: Syracuse returns to the road after an eight-day lay-off for a BIG EAST weekend-swing at Louisville and Cincinnati. The Orange meets the Cardinals on Saturday, September 29 at 2:00 p.m. SU and the Bearcats play on Sunday, September 30 at 2:00 p.m.
