HAMILTON, N.Y. – The women's soccer team used goals by senior midfielder Jen Taormina and junior forward Amanda Arcuri to defeat Colgate, 2-0, on Sunday. Sophomore goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made eight saves in her fourth shutout of the season. With the win the Orange improves to 4-3-2, while the Raiders go to 5-3-1.
SU got on the board only 3:30 into the game when Taormina bent a corner kick into the far post. She leads the team with a career-high four goals and nine points. The tally was the fastest Syracuse goal scored since 2004, when Shana Thomas scored 3:04 into a game at Georgetown.
Arcuri registered her first goal of the season and second of her career when she received the ball in the goal box at 24:38. Freshman midfielder Dana Bergstrom won the ball in front of the goal and was able to find Arcuri. The assist was the first career point for Bergstrom.
Bennett-Hattan registered her 10th shutout of her career, which places her in sole possession of third place on the school's all-time shutout list. She made five saves in the first half and three in the second.
Colgate held the advantage in shots (16-14) and corner kicks (7-4).
The Orange is away at Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 28th at 7 p.m. before returning to the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 30th for a 1 p.m. against 18th-ranked West Virginia.
