SYRACUSE, NY – Week six saw four Orange squads in action with three programs opening BIG EAST competition. The Orange field hockey team continued its BIG EAST schedule with a tight 2-1 double-overtime loss at No. 16 Louisville before a resounding 5-0 shutout win against Saint Louis one day later. The men’s soccer team opened conference play with a 2-0 shutout at home against Pittsburgh. Volleyball continued its winning ways following a three-game sweep of Rutgers in its BIG EAST opener. The SU women’s soccer squad is coming off a 2-1 week after identical 2-0 wins at in-state rivals Binghamton and Colgate. The men and women’s cross country teams were idle this week, but are gearing up for the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, September 28.
The Orange men and women’s cross country teams enjoyed an off week following their impressive first-place finishes at the Boston College Invitational on September 14. Syracuse is gearing up for the regular-season opener on Friday, September 28 at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. on the campus of Lehigh University.

Senior forward Jessica Lerew scored five minutes into the contest and junior goalkeeper Heather Hess stop 11 shots, but the Orange loss a hard-fought 2-1 BIG EAST game in double-overtime at Louisville on Friday. Syracuse rebounded in explosive fashion with a 5-0 win against Saint Louis on Saturday. Senior back Brittany Angellella and freshman midfielder Lelia Sacré each tallied two scores against the Billikens. Freshman forward Shelby Schraden added SU’s fifth and final tally. Hess and freshman goalkeeper Christina Puggi each played one half and combined for the shutout.

Sophomore forward Hansen Woodruff collected two goals as the Orange remained unbeaten and opened the BIG EAST season with a 2-0 shutout win against Pittsburgh on Friday. Sophomore goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia made four saves en route to his second straight shutout. The blanking was the 12th of Cavicchia’s career, tying him for sixth on SU’s all-time career shutout list. A No. 5 West Virginia goal, nearly 107 minutes after the opening whistle, evened the Orange’s conference record to 1-1 and handed SU its first loss since October 18, 2006. Brien Chamney and Kyle Hall powered the Syracuse offense with three shots apiece. The Orange out-shot the nationally ranked Mountaineers, 18-17.

The Orange volleyball team opened the 2007 BIG EAST campaign with a resounding 3-0 sweep against Rutgers on Friday. Sophomore Sarah Morton led the SU charge with a team-high 15 kills, on just 19 total attacks, and six total blocks. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish paired nine kills with eight digs and senior Cheryl Cobbina posted seven kills and eight digs. Redshirt-junior April Quigley tallied a team-leading 24 assists as the Orange improved its record to 6-0 at home this season.

The women's soccer team just completed its busiest week of the season by playing three games in six days. SU started with a 2-1 overtime victory at Binghamton. Senior midfielder Jen Taormina scored the Orange's first goal to square the game at 1-1 and sophomore forward Chelsea Berry netted the game-winner 41 seconds into overtime. Friday's game at St. John's marked the beginning of BIG EAST competition. The game remained scoreless until the 59th minute when St. John's got on the board. The Orange rebounded two days later with a 2-0 win at Colgate. Sophomore goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made eight saves in the shutout and remains atop the school's all-time goals-against average list (0.90). Taormina scored the game-winner only 3:30 into the contest when she scored while taking a corner kick. Junior forward Amanda Arcuri added the second goal, her first of the season during the 24th minute.
