SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After collecting 19 digs against Akron on Saturday, senior Joscie Kaup became the all-time leader in career digs at Syracuse. As a result, Kaup has been awarded the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week honor.
Kaup tallied a team-high 83 digs and a 5.93 digs per game average as the Orange posted a 2-2 mark on the week. The senior led Syracuse in digs in all four matches with her best performance, 29 digs, coming in a 3-1 win against Wright State. Kaup’s team-high 14 digs against Buffalo paced the Orange to a 3-0 sweep.
Kaup’s record-breaking performance against Akron raised her career total to 1,806 digs and eclipsed former SU player Rachel Watson’s (1996-99) all-time mark of 1,791, a standard that stood for more than seven seasons.
Now with a team-high 167 digs in 2007, Kaup is on pace to lead the Orange in the defensive category for the third straight season. After tallying the program’s best single-season output with 685 digs in 2006, Kaup entered this season as the all-time leader with a 4.40 career digs-per-game average.
Coming off Monday’s 3-0 win against Albany, the Orange prepare for the weekend’s two-day Big Orange Tournament. Syracuse welcomes Fordham, Princeton and Texas Tech to Manley Field House for the annual event. Fordham and Texas Tech begin the tournament at 4:30 on Friday before the Orange hosts Princeton at 7:00 p.m.
