SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshmen phenoms forward Donte’ Greene and point guard Jonny Flynn have scored in bunches this season for Syracuse and 32nd-year Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim. Heading into Saturday’s BIG EAST tilt with the University of South Florida, the explosive scoring tandem ranks third nationally among freshmen with a combined 33.57 points per game average.
The flashy 6-11 forward leads all Syracuse scorers and ranks second in the BIG EAST with an 18.9 points per game average. Greene has surpassed the 20-points plateau eight times this season while scoring in double figures in 13 out of the 14 outings. After twice posting 25-point efforts in wins against Fordham (11/16), Washington (11/21) and East Tennessee State (12/15), he collected a career-best 26 points in a victory against versus Colgate on December 18.
Flynn’s Orange debut in front of a nationally televised audience against Siena will go down in the SU record books as one of the all-time great performances by a first-year player. Flynn erupted for a career-best 28 points on 10-for-13 shooting overall, including a blistering 6-for-7 long-distance display, in a 97-89 Syracuse win. The saavy court general has totaled double figure scoring outings in 11 of 14 games this season.
Highly-regarded as the second-ranked recruiting class in the nation, the Orange’s first-year players have not disappointed. Greene and Flynn are two parts of a freshman scoring attack that is responsible for more than 50 percent of Syracuse’s offense. The Orange has tallied a 7-2 mark in games both Greene and Flynn have scored in double figures.
Indiana’s Eric Gordon and Jordan Crawford lead the country with a combined 37.3 points per game scoring average while Kansas State’s Michael Beasley and Jacob Pullen rank second (34.9). Southern Cal’s O.J. Mayo and Davon Jefferson are fourth with 33.52 points per contest.
Syracuse returns to the Carrier Dome hardwood and will look to capture its sixth straight win against BIG EAST foe USF on Saturday at noon. Orange fans catch SU against the Bulls on ESPN Regional (Time Warner 26). A live broadcast of the game can be heard on the Syracuse ISP network’s flagship TK-99 FM and Orange All-Access.
