PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Junior guard Chandrea Jones scored 19 points in the Orange women's basketball team's 85-75 setback at Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. The contest, which was SU's first BIG EAST road game, halted the squad's school-record 12 game winning streak. Syracuse is now 13-2 and 1-1 in the conference, while Pittsburgh goes to 12-3 and 2-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Orange had four players in double-figures with senior forward Fantasia Goodwin and sophomore forward Nicole Michael each scoring 16 points, while freshman guard Erica Morrow had 11 points.
Jones has led the team in scoring eight times this season and has scored in double-figures 14-out-of-15. Goodwin was one rebound shy of her ninth double-double of the season. She led the way with nine.
After trailing 71-53 with 5:59 remaining, the Orange went on an 8-2 run and was able to pull within eight with 2:38 remaining. Michael produced seven points during the span including two straight layups to move the score to 73-61.
Syracuse didn't come any closer the rest of the way and a layup by Goodwin with two seconds left produced the 85-75 final.
In the game, Syracuse finished shooting 35.8 percent (24-67) from the floor, 30.0 percent (3-10) from behind the arc and 77.4 percent (24-31) from the line. Pittsburgh connected on 46.3 percent (25-54) of its shots, 38.5 percent (5-13) from three-point range and 81.1 percent (30-37) from the line.
Pitt outrebouned Syracuse 40-37, but the Orange had 32 points in the paint and 15 second chance points. The Panthers had 18 points in the lane and 13 second chance tallies.
SU trailed 40-36 at halftime and were led by Morrow and Goodwin, who each had nine points. Morrow connected on 3-of-4 to help the Orange shoot 40.0 percent (12-30) from the floor and 60.0 percent (3-5) from behind the arc in the first.
Morrow sparked a Syracuse 9-2 run that tied the game at 19-19 at 6:21. The freshman connected on two free throws at 8:51 and Goodwin capped the streak with her second layup of the run.
Pittsburgh had built a seven point advantage (17-10) at 9:37 thanks to a 9-0 run between 15:22 and 11:59. Panthers senior guard Mallorie Winn started things for her team with a three-pointer and junior guard Shavonte Zellous ended the streak with a jumper.
The Panthers grabbed an eight point advantage (27-21) at 4:59, but the Orange pulled with two (36-34) after Morrow hit a jumper off a spin at 1:45 and Jones drained a pull-up at 1:27.
Four straight by Pitt and a layup by senior forward Tracy Harbut produced the halftime score.
Pitt played the majority of the first without its second-leading scorer senior center Marcedes Walker, who is averaging 14.6 ppg, due to foul trouble.
