Syracuse's success is contributed to a balanced attack on the offensive and defensive sides of the court. The Orange's offense, which is averaging 75.5 ppg, is 19th in the nation and seventh in the BIG EAST. Its defense, which is allowing 57.3 ppg, ranks 46th in the country and eighth in the conference.
SU's scoring margin of +18.2 ppg is good enough for 15th in the country and fourth in the BIG EAST. Junior guard Chandrea Jones and senior forward Fantasia Goodwin have been the driving force on the offense. Jones is tied for ninth in the conference with 16.0 ppg and Goodwin is eighth in the BIG EAST and 33rd in the country with a field goal percentage of .553.
Goodwin is dominating the glass as well with 10.3 rpg, ranking her 17th in the country and fourth in the league. Jones is averaging 8.4 rpg and is eighth in the BIG EAST. As a team, Syracuse is producing a +13.6 rebounding margin (47.9-34.3) which is the third highest nationally and second in the conference.
The Orange's defense is limiting its opponents to .344 shooting per outing, 12th lowest in the country and 4th in the league. SU is averaging 5.14 blocks per game and is led by senior center Vaida Sipaviciute, who is averaging 2.07 blocks per contest. Syracuse ranks 25th in the country and second in the BIG EAST in blocked shots and Sipaviciute ranks 46th and third.
As a result of the stellar play, the Orange has the fifth highest winning percentage in the country (.929).
The Orange will try and improve on that number as it pacts its bags and hits the road for its first BIG EAST road game of the season. Syracuse's three-game road winning streak is its longest since it won three consecutive contest during the 2002-03 campaign. Including SU's 88-67 victory against Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 1 during the Taco Bell Warhawk Classic, the Orange has won four straight away from the Dome.
Both Syracuse and Pittsburgh are receiving votes and have a 1-0 conference record. Pittsburgh is 11-3 overall and on a six-game winning streak.
Orange fans can listen to the game on WTLA 1200/1440 AM with 2004 Syracuse graduate Brian Higgins making the call. The broadcast can also be heard via Orange All Access. Live stats can be followed through Pittsburgh's athletics website (click here).
