FLUSHING, N.Y. – Sophomore Christina Tan and junior Ashley Spicer each recorded two singles victories and one doubles win apiece to lead the Syracuse tennis team at the four-day Billie Jean King Invitational in the Orange's second fall tournament of the year.
Head coach Luke Jensen directed his troops through eight singles flights and four doubles brackets at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open.
Tan picked up her first win against Columbia's Natalia Christenson, 6-1, 6-0, in the singles "I" flight, following up the triumph with another victory against Winthrop's Elizaveta Zaytseva, 6-0, 6-3. In doubles competition, Tan and partner sophomore Jacquelynn Tang posted an 8-2 win against Ashley Harvey and Amy Hosotsuji in the doubles "III" grouping.
Tang overcame Cornell's Katharine Duboc, 6-2, 7-6(4) in the singles "VII" bracket.
Spicer's first singles' win of the season came through Harvard's Carolina Davis, 7-5, 6-0, in the singles "VI" flight. The Round Rock, Texas native clipped Iowa's Jennifer Barnes by a 6-2, 6-0 count in the consolation quarterfinal round. Spicer and her doubles partner, sophomore Simone Kalhorn, defeated the duo of Brett Finkelstein and Tanja Vucetic, 8-6, in the doubles "II" flight.
Kalhorn beat Brown's Kathrin Sorokko in the singles "II" division for her solo victory by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
Junior Chelsea Jones registered one singles and doubles victory. Jones took down fellow conference-member Rutgers' Katherine Arlak in a back-and-forth battle, 6-4, 0-6, 10-8, in the singles "III" set and coupled that with a doubles "I" flight win with partner freshman Emily Harman. Jones/Harman defeated Caroline Davis and Laura Peterzan by an 8-3 tally.
Harman recorded her individual win in the singles "IV" flight against Dartmouth's Shelley Carpeni by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.
Freshmen Victoria Ford and Allison Haynes acquired valuable collegiate experience on a grand scale as the two combined to play in four singles matches and five doubles contests.
With two fall tournaments under its belt, the Orange travels to Philadelphia, Pa. for a three-day showdown at an ITA Regional Tournament from Friday, Oct. 24 to Monday, Oct. 28.
