After Years of Interest, Berry Joins Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Troya Berry is a 6-foot-2-inch freshman forward joining the ranks of the Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team. After she began playing at the age of nine, it wasn’t long before she reached success. During her senior year, the Flint, Michigan native hit a career-high 28 points.
With the success she achieved in high school, it is no surprise that Berry was in contact with associate head coach, Matt Luneau, since eighth grade. However, it wasn’t until she began talking to head coach Quentin Hillsman that she realized the greatness of the Syracuse program.
“When they came to my home visit, he brought some books and talked to me about the things he and the ladies do,” said Berry. “It was the whole package, since Syracuse is a well known name, I knew I would be at a place where I could be something.”
During the upcoming season, Berry hopes to be featured as a BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, which shouldn’t be too difficult considering her already-impressive resume. The four-time state champion has already been named Adidas Top Ten All-American, and is the No. 59 ranked player in the country and No. 12 ranked power forward by College Girl’s Basketball Report. She also earned Street and Smith Honorable Mention All-American Honors and was named Class C All-State her senior year.
As the team looks ahead to another hopeful season, Berry is anxious to play against Connecticut forward Maya Moore.
“I want to see what she’s about,” said Berry.
