TAMPA, FL -- Senior Patrick Shadle converted field goals of 43 and 24 yards and running back Curtis Brinkley scored a rushing touchdown for the Orange in a 45-13 loss at #19/20 South Florida.
Shadle, the most accurate kicker in SU history, improved to 11-of-12 on three-pointers this season. He is seventh in career field goals with 37 and has made 37-of-45 (.822) in his collegiate tenure. Shadle added an extra point to give him seven points on the afternoon. He advanced by Joe Morris (1978-81) and into 13th on the school's career scoring list. Shadle now has 168.
Brinkley had another stellar day for the Orange. He had a 24-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for the Orange. Brinkley moved past former SU standout Jim Nance into 21st place on the school's career rushing yardage list. Nance, who went on to a prosperous NFL career with the Boston Patriots, had 1,605 rushing yards in his career (1962-64). Brinkley has 1,701 yards in his career, just four shy of Bob Avery (1974-77) and five in back of Daryl Johnston (1985-88) in the 19th spot. Brinkley finished with 20 carries for 112 yards, marking his fifth 100-yard game of the campaign.
USF quarterback Matt Grothe completed 19-of-26 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns. He hooked up with Taurus Johnson on scoring tosses of seven and nine yards and hit A.J. Love from one yard out. Grothe also ran 10 times for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Syracuse's Cameron Dantley completed 11-of-27 passes for 129 yards. He had a 28-yard completion to freshman wide-out Marcus Sales, the longest catch of his career. Junior Lavar Lobdell had four catches for 37 yards.
Senior linebacker Jake Flaherty and sophomore cornerback Mike Holmes each had 11 total tackles. Flaherty also forced a fumble and Holmes recovered the miscue and returned it seven yards. Sophomore linebacker Mike Mele had 10 tackles, equaling his career-best effort from the 2007 game against USF. Junior defensive tackle Arthur Jones had three solo stops, including a tackle for a three-yard loss. He passed Keith Bulluck and moved into eighth on the SU career tackles-for-loss list. Jones now has 24.5.
Sophomore punter Rob Long punted seven times for 353 yards, an average of 50.4 yards per kick. With the effort he moved into 10th on the career punting yards list (4,741) at Syracuse, passing George Jakowenko (1968-70), who had 4,553 yards on 118 kicks. Long has punted 109 times in his collegiate tenure, nine behind Jakowenko in 10th place. Long had a 67-yard boot in the game.
Syracuse exchanged scoring blows with USF in a spirited first half. After Benja Williams opened the point production with a one-yard touchdown run for USF, Syracuse answered with a nine-play, 33-yard drive that ended with Shadle's 43-yard field goal.
The Bulls responded right away, marching 82 yards and scoring on an 11-yard pass from Grothe to Johnson. The Orange struck back, thanks to consecutive completions from Dantley to junior tight end Mike Owen for 10 yards and his 28-yard hookup with Sales. Brnkley carried for 11 yards and following a USF penalty, found paydirt on a 24-yard rush.
After the two squads traded punts, Grothe engineered a six-play, 80-yard march in 2:22 that he finished on an 11-yard touchdown run. The Orange bounced back one more time, moving 62 yards in nine plays before Shadle converted a three with four seconds left in the half. At the break, USF led, 21-13.
The Bulls took control in the second half with three touchdowns and a field goal on consecutive possessions. The defensive dominated as well, holding the Orange without a first down over the final two quarters.
Following an open weekend, Syracuse returns to action at home against Louisville on Nov. 1.
