Six Syracuse athletics teams were in action this past week playing in nine games and participating in one invitational. Field Hockey is the lone unbeaten team in NCAA field hockey after posting wins against Albany and Yale. Men’s soccer cut South Florida’s five-game winning streak short in a 0-0 tie in Tampa, Fla. Volleyball played two four-set matches, posting a win against Connecticut in its BIG EAST home opener. After having its Friday match at Georgetown postponed, the women’s soccer team lost, 3-0, to Villanova. The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the 35th annual Paul Short Invitational on Friday. The men finished second and the women finished fifth. The Syracuse women’s ice hockey team made its debut this past week playing nearby Colgate on Wednesday, and traveling to Wisconsin on Friday for a two-game series with the Badgers.
After two matches this past week, the Orange field hockey team remains the only unbeaten team in the NCAA. The Orange earned a 3-1 victory against Albany and 3-0 win versus Yale. Against Albany, the Orange’s three goals brought the season total to 60, eclipsing the 1990 record of 58. Senior Shannon Taylor scored two goals in the victory. She has 36 points for the season and has moved into fourth place in school history. Freshman Martina Loncarica tallied two assists to tie the school record of 16, and sophomore Maggie Befort recorded two assists to give her 13 for the season, the most ever by sophomore.
