Volleyball Concludes Regular-season Hosting Pittsburgh and West Virginia

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse volleyball (15-14, 6-6 BE) concludes its 2008-09 regular-season schedule this weekend when it welcomes Pittsburgh and West Virginia to the Women’s Building. The Orange face the Panthers Friday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. and the Mountaineers on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at Senior Day.
“Entering the last weekend of the regular season, we will try and take advantage of being able to play at home and secure a spot in the BIG EAST Championship,” head coach Jing Pu said.
Syracuse is coming off two heartbreaking setbacks to Seton Hall and Villanova last weekend. Junior Sarah Morton was a force on defense recording 14 total blocks, including 10 against the Pirates. She also had 11 kills in the match. Three Orange women contributed double-digit kills with senior Marissa Kanemura leading the way with 12. Sophomore Hayley Todd led SU with eight kills at Villanova, while senior April Quigley registered 22 assists.
Scouting the Panthers (November 14, 7 p.m.)
Pittsburgh heads to Syracuse this Friday after suffering losses in its last two home games against BIG EAST foes Louisville (3-0) and Cincinnati (3-0).
During the match against Louisville, junior Meagan Dooley had two solo blocks to tie for third-best all-time on Pitt’s career blocking list with 88. Dooley also contributed five kills in the match. Senior Kelly Campbell and sophomore Amy Town combined for 20 kills against the Cardinals.
Against Cincinnati, Town posted a match-high 11 kills, while freshman Allyson Hodnik and senior Nicole Taurence set the pace offensively by tallying a total of 27 assists.
Scouting the Mountaineers (November 16, 2 p.m.)
West Virginia currently sits in last place in the BIG EAST as it prepares to play its final regular-season game against Syracuse on Sunday, Nov. 16. Most recently, the Mountaineers have suffered setbacks to Rutgers (1-3), Cincinnati (0-3) and Louisville (0-3).
Against Cincinnati, freshman setter Kari Post recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 11 assists and 11 digs. Junior Abby Raines, senior Lisa Hough and freshman Michelle Kopecky registered three kills apiece.
During a disappointing match against Louisville, the scores of the three sets were all within five points. However, the Mountaineers failed to escape with a win in any of the sets. Post had 24 assists, while sophomore Bonnie West tallied 17 digs.

The Orange look to secure a spot in the BIG EAST Championship, which will take place Nov. 21-23 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Five teams, St. John’s, Cincinnati, Louisville, Connecticut and Notre Dame, have secured spots, leaving three championship spots up for grabs.
