It was another exciting weekend in Syracuse athletics as two teams extended their post season schedule and one secured a spot in the post season. The No. 3 field hockey team made it through the NCAA First and Second Rounds with victories against UMass and Princeton. The Orange faces No. 2 Wake Forest in the Final Four in Louisville, Ky. The women’s cross country team finished second in the NCAA Northeast Regional and secured a spot in the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. Two members of the men’s cross country team will join the women in Terre Haute, Ind. Women’s volleyball secured a spot in the 2008 BIG EAST Championship after posting wins against Pittsburgh (3-1) and West Virginia (3-0) at home this weekend. The Orange is the No. 6 seed and will face Louisville on Friday, Nov. 21 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The women’s rowing team secured three top five finishes in the Foot of the Charles, and women’s ice hockey rounded out Olympic sport action with two losses to Mercyhurst (1-4, 1-7).
With two victories in the NCAA First and Second rounds this past weekend, the No. 3 field hockey team advances to the Final Four for the first time in program history. The Orange will face No. 2 Wake Forest on Friday, Nov. 21 in Louisville, Ky. The Orange faced UMass in the first round, posting a 3-2 victory against the Minutewomen. SU outshot UMass 20-8 and had a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Shannon Taylor had two goals for the Orange, while freshman Martina Loncarica contributed one. It was a freshmen event when the Orange faced Princeton on Sunday, Nov. 16. Loncarica, Shelby Schraden and Nicole Nelson scored the goals for the Orange in the overtime victory.

Volleyball
For the second-straight season, Syracuse advances to the BIG EAST Championship after securing two wins this past weekend. The Orange heads to Pittsburgh this weekend as the No. 6 seed. On Friday, the Orange earned a 3-1 win against Pittsburgh. Junior Kacie MacTavish registered a team-leading 16 kills, senior setter April Quigley had 50 assists and junior Sarah Morton posted five total blocks. The momentum carried over into Sunday’s match against West Virginia where SU posted a 3-0 win. Morton led the team with 13 kills and 10 total blocks. Quigley had 32 assists and senior Marissa Kanemura and freshman Noemie Lefebvre each recorded 13 digs.

Cross Country
The women’s cross country team advances to the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history after placing second in the NCAA Northeast Regional. The Orange women were led by senior Nana Sang-Bender’s fourth place finish in the 6K run (21:35.6). Sang-Bender secured a spot in SU cross country history as the highest placing female distance runner. Joining the women in Terre Haute, Ind. from the men’s team will be juniors Brad Mill and Dan Busby. They led the men to a sixth place finish in the 10K race, placing ninth (32:01.2) and 10th (32:03.3), respectively.

Women’s Ice Hockey
The Syracuse women’s ice hockey team faced arguably the best team in its conference this past weekend. In Friday’s match at the War Memorial, the Orange lost 4-1. Freshman Megan Skelly recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the season and freshman Lisa Mullan registered her eighth assist. On Saturday, the women returned to Tennity Ice Pavilion. Despite losing 7-1, goalkeeper Lucy Schoedel had a career-high 46 saves and Mullan scored SU’s lone goal.

The women’s rowing team closed out the fall season at the Foot of the Charles placing a boat in the top five in each race. The varsity four “A” boat (Bow-Katie Lynch, 2-Natalie Mastracci, 3-Kaitlin Grant, Stroke-Liz Henwood, Coxswain-Kate Todd) placed fifth out of 50 with a time of 14:31.9. The novice eight “A” boat (Bow-Keriann Miller, 2-Natalie McCrudden, 3-Carmen Failla, 4-Tiffany Macon, 5-Naomi Carlson, 6-Tija Bross, 7-Annie Couwenhoven, Stroke-Mary Carlson, Coxswain-Allison Todd) also placed fifth (14:05.0) in its respective race out of 33 teams. The third varsity eight boat (Bow-Jessica Arevalo, 2-Ali Sayer, 3-Kelsey Wiemer, 4-Brandis Arcadia, 5-Ashley Tabor, 6-Brittany Jock, 7-Mandy DeHaven, Stroke-Alex Pines, Coxswain-Catherine Wilcox) placed third in its race with a time of 14:18.7.
