SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Immediately following the victorious overtime thriller against Portland State to launch the 2008-09 home season, the Syracuse women's basketball team grabbed its gear and took off for a similar climate as the one in Central New York. The Orange will be one of four teams to play in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Tuesday, November 25 and Wednesday, November 26 at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska.
Syracuse drew first-time opponent Jackson State of the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Tuesday, November 25. The opening tip goes off at 11:59 pm EST. All games are played in the Alaska time zone which is four hours behind Syracuse time.
There will be live stats provided by goseawolves.com and a live broadcast of the game can be heard on WTLA AM 1200 and Orange All-Access.
2008 Great Alaska Shootout
The winner of the SU-JSU contest will square-off against the victor of the Cal State Northridge – Alaska Anchorage encounter in the championship showdown on Wednesday, November 26. A third-place consolation match is programmed the same day.
The 2008 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout denotes the first trip for each visiting team. SU’s hoopsters have never commenced battle in The Last Frontier although the men claimed victory in this tournament in 2000 against Missouri, 84-62.

Jackson State
The Tigers are under the leadership of eighth-year head coach Denise Taylor. JSU returns two starters and 12 letterwinners from last year’s squad which finished 18-14 overall and 15-3 in the SAC, good enough for second place. Jackson State earned its first NCAA Tournament berth last season since 1995 when they emerged victorious out of their conference tournament.

The Alaska-Anchorage women’s basketball team, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Div. II, begins defense of its two straight Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. UAA has held five of its first six opponents under 30 percent shooting from the field as it has allowed just 46.2 points per game. Guided by head coach Tim Moser, the Seawolves wrapped up a 30-5 record last season, qualifying them for the NCAA Division II Semifinals.

If Cal State Northridge were to knock off the Seawolves and Syracuse hits its stride against Jackson State, the Matadors would be the only team SU has faced in the 2008 Shootout field. Syracuse clipped the Big West Conference component on November 19, 2001 by an 80-57 count at the Matadome.

off to a good start
The Orange is off to a good start with a 3-1 record for the second-consecutive season. Syracuse has posted victories against Siena, Maryland Eastern Shore and Portland State. Its only loss was a 78-71 setback at No. 17/18 Ohio State. Morrow has led the team in points 10 times in only 35 career games.
BIG EAST Beast
Senior guard Chandrea Jones garnered a conference award for SU after she was named to the first honor roll of the 2008-09 BIG EAST women’s basketball season. Jones earned the award after an impressive week of play kick started with a career-high 33 points in the season opener at Siena. The Baltimore, Md. native posted her first double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds in Syracuse’s 68-28 win at Maryland Eastern Shore. She tallied 14 points at Ohio State and notched her second double-double, 10th of her career, against Portland State with 24 points and 13 boards.
Morrow's Career High
Sophomore guard Erica Morrow reset her career-high with 27 points in SU’s 82-77 home opening overtime victory against Portland State. Morrow has totaled at least 23 points in three of the Orange’s first four games. The second-year guard scored 25 in SU’s season opening win at Siena and 23 at No. 17/18 Ohio State.
Double the Fun
Junior guard Juanita Ward recorded her second double-double as a member of the Orange in the setback at Ohio State. She recorded 11 points and 12 rebounds. Ward has reached double figures in the rebounding column in three out of four games this season. Against Siena, she contributed a game-high 14 rebounds, including six offensive boards and eight on the defensive end. In addition, Ward contributed eight points in that contest. Against UMES, Ward recorded 20 points and 15 rebounds, both career-highs.
Scoring in the Paint
The Orange's physical inside presence has dominated in the paint throughout the first four games. In the home opener, Syracuse outscored the Portland State 52-14. So far in 2008, SU has outscored its first four opponents, 162-60, in the paint.

Orange Cleaning the Glass
Syracuse was strong on the boards in its first four games of the 2008-09 campaign. Most recently, the Orange outrebounded the PSU Vikings 48-65. So far this season, SU has outrebounded its opponents 203-151. Last season the Orange averaged 43.5 rebounds per game, which ranked second in the BIG EAST. Connecticut led the league with a 44.8 per game average.
New Orange
Syracuse's three freshmen have already had an impact in the Orange's first four decisions. Freshman forward Tyler Ash made her first start at home against Portland State, pulling down three boards on the defensive end. First-year forward Troya Berry played in her third game against the Vikings at the Dome and dropped in a season-high seven points. Redshirt freshman guard Chanieka Williams recorded her first steal for the Orange in her first game at Maryland Eastern Shore.
