It was another exciting weekend in Syracuse Athletics with some teams wrapping up their regular seasons, while others are just beginning. The women’s field hockey team earned the No. 1 seed to the 2008 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship after posting a 7-1 victory against Rutgers. The men’s soccer team secured its first winning season since 1999 with a 3-2 season finale win against No. 20/21 Louisville. The Orange women’s volleyball team went 1-1 in its two conference matches over the weekend, coming out on the winning end of a five-set match at DePaul. The men’s and women’s cross country teams secured fifth-place finishes at the BIG EAST Championships and will begin preparing for the NCAA East Regional taking place in two weeks. Orange swimming and diving competed at Boston University with the men winning six events and the women winning five. The women’s ice hockey team is on a three-game winning streak after earning two wins against Sacred Heart in its first two games at Tennity Ice Pavillion. Rounding out the weekend events were four first-place finishes by the men’s and women’s crew teams at the Syracuse Invitational on Onondaga Lake.
The No. 3 women’s field hockey team earned a share of the 2008 BIG EAST Regular-season Championship on Saturday, Nov. 1 when it posted a 7-1 in at Rutgers. Sophomore Lindsey Conrad scored three goals for the Orange for her second hat trick of 2008, while freshman Martina Loncarica contributed a school-record tying three assists for the fourth time this season. The team heads into the BIG EAST Championship semifinals this week with a program best 18-1 overall record. The Orange earned the No. 1 seed to the championship and will face Providence on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11:30 a.m.

The Syracuse men’s soccer team clinched its first winning season since 1999 on Saturday, Nov. 1 at the SU Soccer Stadium with a 3-2 overtime win against No. 20/21 Louisville. The Orange fell behind early as Louisville took a 2-0 lead. However, senior Spencer Schomaker and junior Tom Perevegyencev scored the two goals for the Orange to force overtime. Junior Hansen Woodruff scored the overtime goal 2:36 into the session for the win. It was SU’s second win against a ranked team in 2008 after the Orange defeated No.20/22 Providence earlier this season.

Volleyball
The Orange volleyball team split its two matches this weekend with BIG EAST teams. After suffering a 3-2 setback to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, the Orange rallied at DePaul for a 3-2 victory against the Blue Demons. Junior Sarah Morton led the Orange in both matches. She tallied 37 kills for the weekend, including a career-high 25 at Notre Dame. Morton also was a big contributor on defense posting 14 total blocks combined, with a match-high 10 at DePaul. The Orange was able to out-block both opponents, going 9-6 against the Fighting Irish and 17-5 against the Blue Demons.

Cross Country
The men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished fifth out of 14 and 16 teams, respectively, at the 2008 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship on October 31. The teams competed at Van Cortlandt Park, the site of the NCAA Northeast Regional in two weeks. Junior Brad Miller led the men with a fourth-place finish in the 8K trial with a time of 24:37, while senior Nana Sang-Bender placed 14th in the women’s 6K trial with a time of 20:59. Sang-Bender’s performance marks the third time she has led the Orange women at the BIG EAST Championship.

On Saturday, the Orange posted a 7-3 win against Sacred Heart. Freshman Megan Skelly and senior Nikki Leone both registered two goals in the game. The Orange will be back in action Nov. 14 when it hosts Mercyhurst.

The Syracuse men’s and women’s swimming and diving team continued its 2008-09 season at Boston University on Saturday, Nov. 1. Despite not winning the dual meet, the Orange men won six events and the Orange women won five. Sophomore Natalie Mazzetta won two events, including the 1,000 free (10:26.52) and the 200 fly (2:06.04). Junior Boldizsar Kiss was the leader for the Orange men winning two events. He placed first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.15 and the 200 fly at a clip of 1:51.83.

The Syracuse University women’s crew team earned two first-place finishes this weekend in the Syracuse Invitational on the Onondaga Lake. The varsity eight (Bow-Katie Lynch, 2-Susan Groff, 3-Sydney Axson, 4-Heidi Bulk, 5-Rachel Ogundarin, 6-Natalie Mastracci, 7-Kaitlin Grant, Stroke-Liz Henwood, Coxswain-Kate Todd) won its race with a time of 17:54.9. SU’s boat was 35 seconds faster than second-place Buffalo. The nove eight (Bow-Keriann Miller, 2-Tiffany Macon, 3-Carmen Failla, 4-Elizabeth McGehee, 5-Naomi Carlson, 6-Tija Bross, 7-Annie Couwenhoven, Stroke-Mary Carlson, Coxswain-Allison Todd) won its race in 18:23.2. The novice boat was 1:07 faster than Cornell that placed second. The women’s crew team will be back in action on Nov. 15 in Boston, Mass. at the Foot of the Charles.

The freshman eight boat (Bow-James Olson, 2-Dominic Grifo, 3-Aiden Barrett, 4-Derrick Rubin, 5-Joe Gartland, 6-Chris Lutz, 7-Kynan Reelick, Stroke-Elliott Anderson, Coxswain-Isaac Budmen) won its race at a time of 16:04.0. The men’s crew team will be action in action on Nov. 22 at the Foot of the Charles in Boston, Mass.
