PROVIDENCE, R.I. – While a portion of the Syracuse tennis team was competing at the Wilson/ITA East Region Championship in Philadelphia, the remaining Orange took on opponents from Army, Brown, the University of Rhode Island and Stony Brook at the Brown Invitational II hosted by Brown University from Saturday, Oct. 25 through Monday, Oct. 27.
The doubles team of junior Ashley Spicer and sophomore Simone Kalhorn dominated two out of three matches together. Spicer and Kalhorn defeated the teams of Robie Verano/Jurelle Mendoza and Michael Tollerton of Army and Jessica Ahn, 8-4, 8-2, respectively. In their first episode, the Orange pairing was defeated by Rhode Island's Kirsten and Tristany Leikem, 8-3, for a 2-1 overall record for the weekend.
Freshmen Victoria Ford and Allison Haynes linked up for a victory against Army's Maria Casaletto and Angela Smith, 8-2. SU's duet was clipped by URI's Christen Cadigan and Brooke Hoover, 8-3, earlier in the competition.
Sophomore Katlyn Haycock was paired up with Stony Brook's Emily Givens for doubles action, but the two could not get any rallies going as they lost 8-0 to Army's Audrey Hansen and Annie Hang.
After mustering together SU's best record in doubles combat, Spicer and Kalhorn each recorded one singles' win, apiece.
Spicer emerged victorious after going down to the wire with Army's Jess Shurtz in a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8) battle. Kalhorn knocked off Salome Mkervalidze of Army, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in another contest decided in a tiebreaker.
Sophomore Jacquelynn Tang, Haycock, Haynes and Ford were all defeated in singles' action.
The Orange's final fall test is at the Dartmouth Invitational in Hanover, N.H. Play will start on Friday, Nov. 7 and wrap up on Sunday, Nov. 9.
