Onuaku and Lisnere Named Syracuse University Scholar Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Arinze Onuaku (Lanham, Md.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of December 15, 2008.
The No. 13/16th ranked Syracuse men's basketball team remained a perfect 9-0 on the season after throttling Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon, 79-55.
Onuaku, the Orange's starting center, paced Syracuse with a 17-point performance behind 7-of-7 from the field. Onuaku extended his streak of made field goals to 17 in the 24-point victory.
So far this season, the Orange's primary post player, is fourth on the squad by averaging 13.3 points per game and has collected the second most rebounds on the year with 68. The 6'9 center leads the club in field goal percentage with a clip of 79.4 percent (50-of-63).
Last season, Onuaku ranked second in the BIG EAST Conference and ninth in the nation in field-goal percentage (.628). Through that figure, he posted the fourth-best single-season field-goal percentage in SU history.
Onuaku has been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for three consecutive years.
Onuaku, a sports management major, and the rest of the Syracuse basketball team takes on Cleveland State for the first time on Monday night at the Carrier Dome. Tip is set for 7 pm. On Wednesday, the Orange return to the hardwood to host Canisius at 7 pm, concluding its six-game homestand. Senior Lina Lisnere (Riga, Latvia) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of December 15, 2008.
The women's basketball team earned its fourth straight victory by crushing Niagara on Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome by a final tally of 93-54. The Syracuse defense forced a season-high 31 turnovers in the victory.
On Sunday, Lisnere played 16 minutes and recorded her first field goal in four games and a two steals.
The senior forward has played in seven contests this year, averaging 15.1 minutes. Lisnere is averaging 1.7 points and rebounds per game and has amassed five steals throughout the course of the season.
Last season, Lisnere was selected to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. As a sophomore, she was honored as a BIG EAST Academic All-Star. Lisnere has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during in each of her fall and spring semesters.
Lisnere, a retail management and marketing major, and the rest of the Orange (8-2) revisits the Carrier Dome hardwood for the final leg of the five-game homestand on Sunday, December 21st at 4 p.m. when Syracuse hosts Ohio University.
