Delaware State at the Dome
After winning its season opener, Delaware State has hit a four-game slide. The Hornets buzzed by Cheyney in mid-November, but since then, have been beaten by Maryland, Kent State, William and Mary and Navy. Keyhana Wakefield is the Hornets' biggest scoring threat, averaging 12.0 points per game, making 42.9 percent of her field-goal attempts. Thea Littlepage is Delaware State's workhorse, leading the team with 7.0 rebounds per game along with a Hornets' best 12 steals and seven blocks.
Head coach Ed Davis is in his ninth season as head coach of the Lady Hornets. Since accepting the position prior to the 2000-01 season, he has led DSU to the most successful period in the history of the program. Davis has an overall record of 142-104 (.577) at DSU, including a 97-45 (.680) mark in MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) regular season contests.
Saturday afternoon's meeting marks Syracuse's fifth against a first-time opponent.
Last Time Out
Syracuse rode the hot hand of Jones and her 12-for-12 act at the free throw line to lead all scorers in Tuesday night's victory. Michael produced her first double-double of the season (15 points, 11 rebounds) while sophomore guard Erica Morrow lit up the scoreboard with four 3-pointers, five in all, to put Lehigh back on its heels.
Michael took the Orange's first possession to the rack hard and got fouled. After netting both tosses, Syracuse never looked back. SU amassed a lead as big as 13 at one point. The closest the Mountain Hawks ever got to the Orange was four points after a short surge in the beginning of the second half.
Syracuse's inside presence proved to be too much for the Patriot League component. The Orange totaled 26 points in the paint to Lehigh's 18 and beat up the Mountain Hawks on second chance opportunities, 18-8. The defense turned 18 Lehigh turnovers into 21 points, too.
BIG EAST Beast
Jones was named to the BIG EAST honor roll for the second consecutive week. Jones averaged 18.0 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals in Syracuse’s three games last week. Jones recorded consecutive double-doubles against Alaska Anchorage and Longwood. She made 48.8 percent (21-43) of her field goal attempts and 75.0 percent (9-12) of her free throw attempts.
The senior began the week with a 22-point, nine-rebound effort in SU’s 85-74 win against Jackson State. Jones was 8-of-16 (.500) from the floor, including 2-of-5 from behind the 3-point line. She was also 4-of-5 (.800) from the charity stripe. Jones added four assists and three steals.
Against Alaska Anchorage, she recorded her third double-double of the season with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Jones made 50.0 percent (8-16) of her field goal attempts and 83.3 percent (5-6) of her free throw attempts. She added two assists, one block and one steal.
Jones completed the week by registering her second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. She also added two assists and two steals in SU’s 72-40 win against Longwood.
Orange Peels
Michael's 15-point, 11-rebound display not only counted for her first double-double of 2008, but her second-half outburst solidified Syracuse's victory. Michael converted 10 consecutive points for the Orange to take firm control of the game in the critical moments. The Queens, N.Y. aided defensively, as well, by recording a season-best three steals and tying a career-high with two blocks.
Jones led all scorers with 18 points despite being held 3-of-16 from the field. The two-time BIG EAST honor roll honoree beneficiary was targeted by Lehigh all night long, but her relentless aggression lead to a seamless 12-for-12 display. Jones' 100 percent exhibition was the highest free throw percentage since she turned the trick herself against West Virginia on March 3, 2008.
In the first half, it appeared as if Morrow couldn't miss from behind the arc. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native swished 4-of-5 (.800) from downtown, matching a season high in the end with five. She also chalked up a career-high two blocks.
Despite sophomore guard Tasha Harris being held scoreless, she was the conductor behind the offense. Harris handed out a season-best seven assists, marking a team-high through eight games. Junior forward Vionca Murray scored six points, but her highlight came in the rebounding department. Murray tied a career-best with eight rebounds against Lehigh in a career-high 33 minutes of action. Junior forward Juanita Ward was SU's other double-digit scorer with 10 points. The Odessa College transfer leads the team on the offensive glass with 4.6 boards per game.
