SYRACUSE, N.Y. – For the second consecutive weekend, the Orange tennis team (4-3) will compete in three matches in three days. On Friday, SU takes a short trip south down Interstate-81 to face in-state rival Cornell (2:00 p.m.) before returning home on Saturday to start a four-match BIG EAST stretch versus Seton Hall (10:00 a.m.). On Sunday, the squad returns to the road against BIG EAST rival Connecticut (11:00 a.m.).
Orange Rewind
Syracuse took two of three matches last weekend with a 7-0 and 6-1 win against Niagara and Bucknell, respectively. Freshman Simone Kalhorn led the charge, winning five of six contests, including all three singles bouts. The team swept six doubles matches between the two contests, and there are currently three players tied for the team lead with nine wins apiece.
Cornell
The Big Red (2-0), has won both of its spring season contests, and in doing so has failed to lose a single match in either contest. Sophomore Elizabeth Googe leads Cornell in her second season playing at No. 1 singles. Googe, boasting a 4-0 season thus far, earned second-team All-Ivy honors following her rookie campaign.
Seton Hall
In its first match of the season, Seton Hall suffered a 4-3 setback against Atlantic 10 opponent Fordham. At both No. 1 singles and doubles, sophomore Denise Liebschner failed to pick up a victory against the Rams. Last year versus the Orange, Seton Hall lost a 5-2 match in Syracuse. In the contest, junior Maria Vasilyeva recorded a singles victory and sophomore Chelsea Jones recorded a doubles win.
Connecticut
In their opening weekend, the Huskies (1-1) split two matches against Stony Brook and Army, losing to the latter in a close 4-3 battle. Sophomore Kelley LoRusso lost three of her four matches at No. 1 singles and doubles, the lone victory coming in doubles action against Stony Brook. Last year, Connecticut finished at .500 with an 11-11 record and did not play the Orange, nor did it qualify for the BIG EAST Championship Tournament.
What’s Ahead
Syracuse will play the last two matches of a four-match spurt against BIG EAST opponents when it travels west to play DePaul on Saturday, February 23 at 1:00 p.m. and Marquette on Sunday, February 24 at 10:00 a.m. Both contests will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the campus of Marquette.
