SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Heading into the weekend, the Orange tennis squad (2-0) is looking ahead to three matches in as many days. Friday, the team will travel to face-off against in-state rival Niagara (6:00 p.m.) before heading to Buffalo on Saturday to take on the Bulls (12:00 p.m.). The team returns to Syracuse on Sunday for its final weekend match against Bucknell (10:00 a.m.).
Orange Rewind
Last weekend, the Orange faced tough competition against Big 12 foes Kansas State and Missouri. Although the team dropped both matches, 2-5 and 1-6 respectively, the young team gained valuable experience in some hard-fought contests. The weekend was highlighted by sophomore Ashley Spicer going undefeated in her two singles matches, and sophomore Chelsea Jones, who improved her season record to a team-best 6-2.
Niagara
In its two matches this season, the Purple Eagles (0-2) have managed one win in 16 of their matches. The lone victory was courtesy of senior Kim Roberts’ effort at the No. 6 position against Cleveland State. Like the Orange, Niagara is led at the No. 1 spot by a freshman, Raquel Solis. Solis has yet to garner a victory in the young season.
Buffalo
In its lone outing against Niagara, the Bulls (1-0) took all eight of their matches, losing no more than three sets in a match. Senior Andreea Novaceanu won her first match of the year, 6-1, 6-0 in number-one singles and teamed up with Diana Popescu for an 8-0 victory in No. 1 doubles competition. Last year, Buffalo finished its campaign with a 17-3 record, including a 4-3 victory against the Orange in Syracuse.
Bucknell
Similar to Niagara, the Bison (0-2) have managed only one victory in its first 16 matches. After moving from the No. 3 position against Penn State, to No. 1 in its most recent contest against Duquesne, freshman Lauren Lucido earned the first and only win of the year for the Bison. Despite finishing below .500 in the regular season last year, Bucknell made it to the Patriot League Championship before losing to Army, 4-0.
What’s Ahead
Next weekend the Orange will embark on another stretch consisting of three games in three days. The team travels to Cornell on Friday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. and will return to Syracuse on Saturday, February 16 to face BIG EAST-rival Seton Hall at 10:00 a.m. On Sunday, February 17, the team will hit the road again for its match against BIG EAST-foe Connecticut at 11:00 a.m.
