CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) scored three goals and had one assist to lead No. 4 Syracuse in a 13-8 loss to No. 2 Virginia on Saturday, March 1 in Charlottesville, Va. The loss is the Orange’s first of the season after winning its first two games of the 2008 campaign, while Virginia improves to 3-0.
"We certainly had our opportunities and we couldn’t put them away early," said head coach Gary Gait. "We didn’t put the ball in the back of the net when we had the open shot."
The Orange’s Christina Gibson (Jarrettsville, MD) won the opening and draw and Syracuse took it down the field where Rowan scored just 50 seconds into the game. Virginia tied the score at the 21:35 mark and took a 2-1 lead on Brittany Kalkstein’s goal with 19:38 remaining. It marked the first time Syracuse has trailed this season, ending a streak of 130:42 consecutive minutes that the Orange was either tied or held the lead. Virginia scored two straight goals to take a 4-1 lead before Syracuse responded with a 3-0 scoring run of its own to tie the score at 4-4. Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) scored on a free position and then found Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) for a goal at the 5:53 mark. The Orange tied the score when Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) intercepted a pass on a Virginia clear and found Rowan, who scored with 4:31 left on the clock. The Cavaliers’ Whitaker Hagerman scored the final goal of the half at the 3:46 mark to give Virginia a 5-4 halftime lead.
Rowan tied the score with her third goal of the game 2:04 into the second half. The Cavaliers quickly responded with a goal by Brittany Kalkstein 34 seconds later to take a 6-5 advantage. Virginia went up 7-5 and the two teams traded goals before Dove scored on an assist from Rowan to cut the lead to 8-7 with 17:00 to play. That was as close as Syracuse would get as the Cavaliers scored three straight goals, including one with a man-advantage, for an 11-7 lead with 9:51 remaining. Awehiyo Thomas (Six Nations, Ontario) scored on a free position for SU’s final goal as Virginia went on to the 13-8 victory.
Rowan led the Orange with three goals, while Dove finished with two. Quillinan, Thomas and Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) added goals for SU. Blair Weymouth led Virinia with five goals, and Brittany Kalkstein had four goals.
