PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling posted a .545 batting average (12-for-22) during five games at the College of Charleston Classic (March 14-16) en route to being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday. Kelling's team-high average and hit total help the Orange produce four wins and be named the tournament champions. Her 5-for-5 performance during SU's 3-2, eight-inning victory against St. John's set the school standard for hits in a game.
Against the Red Storm she produced the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth to score freshman designated player Tawni Irvine. During that game she totaled one RBI, one run and her second double of the season. She also produced a double during SU's 6-5, extra-innings victory against Binghamton on Sunday.
Kelling started the weekend by going 2-for-3 in the Orange's 2-1, eight-inning win against Binghamton and followed with a 3-for-5 outing in a 12-4 routing of Charleston. On Saturday, she began with her record-breaking performance against the Storms and one hit versus Charleston in a 2-0 loss during the late game. She extended her hitting-streak to five games with her double against the Bearcats on Sunday.
The Davenport, Iowa native is third on the team with a .293 batting average and is second with 22 hits. She is tied with junior catcher Amy Kelley with a team-high six multi-hit games.
She has started all 23 games thus far and was recently moved back to the first spot in the lineup. She is batting .375 when leading off and has stolen a team-best four bases.
Syracuse is back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 26 when it travels to Binghamton for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
