The Syracuse athletics department’s ‘Cuse Cares Community Outreach program will be recognized for its commitment to engagement with the community and Scholarship in Action with the 2008 Chancellor's Awards for Public Engagement and Scholarship. The celebration dinner will take place on March 31 at the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center's Goldstein Auditorium from 5:15 - 7:00 p.m. It marks the 11th consecutive year that Orange student-athletes have earned this award.
“Our student-athletes are an exceptional group of young adults who balance academics and athletics, and give even more by volunteering in the community,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. “They illustrate a great passion for reaching out to the community and their quest for community empowerment is never ending. These young individuals are leaders, scholars and a valuable part of the Syracuse community. I am very proud of this group.”
The ‘Cuse Cares program is one of 14 University programs that will be recognized for service in the community. SU student-athletes have participated in more than 1,000 hours of community service projects since the beginning of the 2007-08 academic year in a variety of activities that enriched the lives of senior citizens, children, the disadvantaged and individuals with disabilities.
The ‘Cuse Cares Community Service Program, which is supported by Citizens Bank, immerses Syracuse University student-athletes and coaches in the community. Throughout the year, Syracuse student-athletes dedicated time to promoting literacy by reading to children at local schools, working with youth empowerment programs, serving food to the homeless, visiting senior citizens, participating in environmental clean-up projects, and putting together holiday baskets for those less fortunate.
Each team has made a significant contribution to the community, emulating Scholarship in Action and touching people’s lives in a variety of ways, such as connecting with teens at the Justice Center and the Boys and Girls Club, visiting patients in area hospitals, distributing school supplies, tutoring and mentoring students, distributing turkeys prior to Thanksgiving, participating in local Meals and Wheels programs, and volunteering at the VA hospital.
SU student-athletes continue their quest in helping organizations in need to raise funds. Throughout the academic year, Orange men and women raised money for the Vera House through gift wrapping, played in the annual Hoops for Hope fundraiser, participated in the Walk with the ‘Cuse for the American Cancer Society, and also took part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and the Crop Walk Canned Food Donation. The men’s lacrosse team is currently holding a can tab drive to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.
The Orange also engage the community on the SU campus by hosting events. Each week in April, children from the Syracuse Parks and Recreation program will attend an academic, athletic and inspirational program. The Student-Athletes Across Borders group (SAAB) is hosting a “Cultural Night” to bring cultural awareness and celebrate diversity. Student-athletes are also planning a clothing drive and a day of community outreach activities on Earth Day.
The ‘Cuse Cares Community Outreach Program allows student-athlete to give and to receive, to put the bold ideas of Scholarship in Action in motion and to share what they’ve learned in athletics with aspiring athletes in the community through soccer camps, lacrosse clinics and more.
