
Orange Rides Two-Match Wave with Red Storm on the Horizon

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse tennis team resumes BIG EAST competition on Saturday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. against in-state foe St. John’s at the Drumlins Tennis Center. In 2008 dual season action, the Orange has tallied a 2-2 record versus opponents from the State of New York.
Syracuse is riding a two-match win streak and boasts a 6-1 record at home this season. The Orange owns a 5-4 record against teams from the BIG EAST conference. Syracuse closes its conference and regular season slate at home against Rutgers on April 5 and at Notre Dame on April 6.
Orange Rewind
The Orange snapped a seven-match skid with a convincing 7-0 win against BIG EAST foe Villanova on March 25. The win marked Syracuse’s fifth against a conference opponent this season, eclipsing its four wins in the BIG EAST from one year ago.
Freshman Christina Tan ended a seven-match slide with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 against Carla Erskine. Classmate Simone Kalhorn halted an eight-match drought with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 triumph at No. 2 versus Emily Urda. Behind Kalhorn and rookie Jacquelynn Tang’s convincing 8-2 win at No. 1, the Orange captured the doubles point for the first time since February 17 against Connecticut.
Syracuse totaled its second win in as many matches and days with a resounding 7-0 victory against in-state foe Colgate on March 26. The Orange concluded its non-conference schedule with its fifth 7-0 sweep of the season and sixth win in seven tries at home.
Junior Maria Vasilyeva tallied her fifth straight win with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 against Isabel Riemer. She improved her record to 14-5 and 10-4 in the three hole.
Sophomore Ashley Spicer owns an 11-8 singles mark after a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 against Cameron Williams. Following a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Villanova’s Dani Phillis, Spicer’s consecutive single-games win streak ended at 18 versus the Raiders. She is 11-3 this season at the No. 4 position.
Scouting the Red Storm • 3-9, 1-2
St. John’s arrives in the Salt City with a 3-9 record and a 1-2 mark against teams from the BIG EAST. The Red Storm, looking to snap a three-match skid dating back to March 18 at Army, ends a four-match road trip against the Orange.
The Red Storm meets the Orange in its first clash with a conference foe since a 5-2 win against Seton Hall on March 12. Alison Adamski and Emily Barnett keyed SJU’s sweep in doubles play with a grinding 8-8 (7-4) win at the No. 1 position.
Adamski led the Storm’s singles efforts with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Barnett helped the carry the momentum, notching a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at the four spot.
Syracuse and St. John’s met twice during the 2007 season, splitting both meetings. The Red Storm totaled a 6-1 win in New York, N.Y. on February 27 before the sixth-seeded Orange exacted revenge with a 4-2 win versus 11th-seeded SJU at the BIG EAST Tournament.
Return-A-Serve
On Saturday, Orange fans are welcomed to participate in a $1.00 "Return-A-Serve" contest with head coach Luke Jensen. All proceeds will benefit the Orange Initiative. A complimentary breakfast will be provided by Dunkin Donuts.
